Bilstein Evolution SE installed
I thought it might be a good idea to make a separate thread for this since I read a lot of owners are struggling with choosing a new coilover system.
So I bought my M240i about 6 months ago, loved the car except the suspension. I had Eibach springs installed on OEM adaptive suspension but besides giving it good looks the car drove like $hit compared to my 2016 M4. Now I preferred keeping the EDC and I like a sporty ride so the Bilstein EVO SE was the way to go and compared to Ohlins without EDC this one was even a bit cheaper. I also changed the standard Pirelli's to Michelin 4S and had the car alligned and boy this move made it a completely different car. Sporty, comfortable, hard or superhard is all subjective so where I drove my M4 in sport all day someone else find comfort mode too hard so I wont go too much into that But the driving performance, the steering improvement and the handling are on a completely different level. Where before the upgrade the nose of the car stayed behind in steering into curves this completely changed now. The standard suspension was way too soft for the weight of the car and while being ok in daily driving the car felt dangerously unstable in fast and consecutive curves. By the way, the EVO series is the same as the G20 so dont worry about this coilover not being available for the G42. The height is adjustable but I put it on the same height as the Eibach springs. I will attach a fast phone pic. |

Hey Troy, How’s the EVO S setup for you a month into it? I am running Eibach springs on my ‘22 M240 xdrive with EDC and my struts have finally given out so it feels like I am driving a 1970s Cadillac. Looking at doing the same setup as you. Do you mind providing an update on your experience? Any issues? Have the jolts around potholes been acceptable? TIA!

After a month I am still super satisfied with this setup. It feels like this setup came straight from BMW, no issues, no strange sounds and the EDC is working perfectly. Comfort modus is really comfortable but still good for a sporty ride and sport modus gives you a firm ride without being unacceptable. In both positions the ride is so much more direct and stable than before. I chose for Evo SE and not for Evo S because I wanted to keep EDC and thought Evo S might be a little too harsh for daily driving. I also had Eibach springs and that was ok for daily driving but for sporty driving the car felt very unstable in long or consecutive curves. The steering is also so much more direct especially when you go into curves. The nose of the car responds much faster now. First I wanted to change the stabilizer bar aswell but I will not do that now. So bottomline, I love this setup. The only thing on the car that can be improved now are the brakes. |

Your post was the reason that kept me excited for the M240i lol. I will most likely be going your route with the EVO SE. I was wondering however if you were able to ever go on a ride with someone with Ohlins for example to compare. I also wanted to upgrade my front sway bars, as I hate the rolly polly feeling - but may end up not needing if I go with the EVO SE. Is the overall body roll reduced by lets say 50%? Also The next step is weight reduction PS : Thank you for posting about your findings! |

Thank you, Troy, for sharing your experience in detail. I am trying to find a local Chicago installer (proving more difficult than one would expect) and once I do I am placing my order!

I think the body roll is reduced by somewhere between 50-75%. Its especially the waving and unbalanced feeling that is so much better in fast curves. The shopowner where I had the Bilsteins installed had Ohlins on his M4 and was very satisfied. Quality wise I dont think you can go wrong with Ohlins, they should be very good. The reasons why I didnt go for Ohlins are the following. I wanted to keep EDC with the normal adaptive buttons in the car so I can change settings whenever I feel like it. If my mood suddenly changes or I see some nice curves I just push the button. Ohlins are adjustable but you have to adjust them one by one if I am not mistaken. Also when I want to trade in the car I can leave this set under the car since everything works just like OEM. Including the cancellation kit for EDC the Ohlins are actually a lot more expensive than the Bilsteins. Together with the previous reason I had no doubt choosing the Bilsteins. I totally understand that you lost excitement for the car, I had the same thing. I love the car, the looks, the engine and the transmission but the suspension was horrible. If I couldnt change this I would have gone for a full M car again. |

Thanks, Troy. Per your experience I picked up the same set and had them installed this week! Just got the car back and the upgrade was worth it. Maintaining the EDC and eliminating the rear suspension thump was an added benefit. Cheers!

One of the reasons why I don't like to spec new cars with every option imaginable - you end up spending thousands in mods that actually end up making the car the best it can be.
I would much rather spend the $4k to get a true sports suspension setup |

The ride will even get better in the coming weeks. Comfort mode will be more comfortable than in the beginning. I have even done 240+ kph on the autobahn and the car feels planted. |

Thanks! This is great to know as I was thinking Comfort mode is like 65-70% of Sport (which isn’t necessarily a bad thing) and if there would ever be a need to go into Sport. Sounds like it will age like a fine wine.

No nothing, plug and play. EDC works great, better than oem. With oem I had the feeling that sport mode just made the ride harder without any improvement of the stability or handling.

Installed same suspension
Absolutely insane In comfort mode like as stock, maybe little softer, but in sport - more grip, more hardness, more fun |

Congrats man! Good choice!
Although comfort has comfort like oem, the handling and responsiveness is so much better also in comfort. Do you have 245's in front? What you have in rear? I guess you dont need spacers... |
