Release Date: Available Now!

Description: Like its brethren, the M3 and M4, the G87 M2 is a giant leap forward from its predecessor in terms of overall performance and its capabilities. Not surprising given the latter model borrowing heavily from its older siblings’ part catalog resulting in a wide swath of components being interchangeable amongst the trio. A few inlet pipe bends prevent the exhaust from being one of those but the M2 is still largely the same as the G8x M3/M4 system. This allowed the extensive drone abatement development applied on those platforms to be used on the G87, fast tracking the R&D process. The result is the introduction of another member of G8x valved axle back exhaust family that elevates the tone to a deeper, more meaningful note while also delivering an extra level of amplification above and beyond its stock counterpart.

To achieve desired sound volume and tone worthy of the G87 M2 the tubing was enlarged to 76mm (vs 70mm stock) to allow freer flow, and reduce backpressure, throughout the entirety of the system. The larger piping gives way to multiple pathways as it nears the rear of the vehicle -- the choice of which is utilized determined by the factory exhaust valves which are retained. When valves are closed, flow is directed into the Dinan muffler, where absorption and reactive technologies are used, and exit out the two inner tips. This limits noise during low-speed driving and produces a more subdued, albeit deeper, and agreeable note. However, when the valves are open during high-load conditions the bulk of the gases bypass the muffler altogether for a near straight pipe design and maximum aural enjoyment to be achieved. It's the perfect marriage for all tastes and allows civility or impassioned aggression depending on what the situation demands. The combination is one Dinan has deemed fitting for the marques signature performance models that cater to the tasteful enthusiast who demand the best for all situations.

Visually, the Dinan G87 M2 exhaust has been skillfully crafted entirely out of T304 stainless steel and TIG welded for the best visual appearance and color. The entire system is then brush finished to further guarantee an immaculate looking system out of the box. The attention to detail is not limited to parts of the system you can't see once the exhaust is installed but is also extended to the exhaust tips themselves. The Dinan exhaust includes massive, quad 4.5-inch (114mm) clamp-on, double-walled, polished stainless steel (or coated black ceramic) and laser engraved exhaust tips. Despite the seemingly cartoonish size on paper, the tips mesh seamlessly and fill the factory cut-outs to complete the OEM+ look with a healthy dose of audible attitude.

LIMITED AVAILABILITY: Initial release of the Dinan G87 M2 Axle Back exhaust is extremely limited. Further raw material for additional production runs are not expected until late Q3 2023.

Features/Benefits:
  • Maximum gains of +6 HP and +5 lb-ft of torque
  • Enjoyably louder, sportier sound
  • Drone abatement technologies used to reduce cabin resonance
  • Four, diffuser filling, 4.5-inch (114mm) double-walled, polished stainless steel (or coated black ceramic) clamp-on tips with laser engraved Dinan logo
  • Larger diameter piping for increased flow (76mm vs. 70mm)
  • 6-pounds lighter than the stock axle back (Stock: 44-pounds vs. Dinan: 38-pounds)
  • Stock exhaust valve actuators reused, and operation of exhaust valve is unchanged so exhaust tone can be adjusted via the M-drive settings
  • Computer controlled exhaust valves are retained and limit noise during low-speed driving and open fully during high-load conditions
  • 100% 304 Stainless Steel construction
  • Factory-like fitment with included mounting hardware

Could we get a decibel measurement of stock vs this? Hard to tell from the video.

Not for me but for only $2K its not a bad deal if loud obnoxious exhaust isnt your thing. its been dinans thing for years. $10K Akra isnt for everyone either.

More videos will be forthcoming. Video here is a rough and dirty version just so it can get to market with something and not have to wait on the release from the media team. The system itself is essentially the G80/G82 exhaust though (slight pipe routing change to the inlets is all) so you could use those videos as a rough comparable if desired as that also includes stock. Should be noted that the delta between valves open and closed on the M2 is greater by virtue of how the factory valves operate between the 2 platforms (M2 valve opens much further than the M3/M4).

What kind of power were you expecting out of an axle back that retains cats and resonators?

Exhausts are effectively a sound only modification. Now if you remove OPF's/Cat's/etc. then that is a different story and some more meaningful additions to overall power can be achieved.

Request has been sent and the engineer is working on compiling the testing data. I have the Dinan variant information handy now which is below but missing the stock data. Will add that to the chart once found and relayed. Included charts in both dB as well as in Sones (true loudness). Since dB's are logarithmic and not directly proportial in scale (60dB is twice as "loud" as 50dB as an example) its usually easier for most to comprehend loudness in Sones that are linear.

Also included the full system (axle back w/ mid/x-pipe) just cause. X-Pipe will not be released until the tail end of summer or into the fall however as raw material for it is backed up.

Quick Update: Can't find the external stock dB data (a few runs of cabin dB was found but that doesnt compare directly to what is given above) so that will need to be grabbed again. Will do so in the coming days at the same time we switch the system back over to stock for additional sound clips.

Personally, I think it's good Dinan shows the system paired with stock components rather than being obnoxiously loud and raspy, Not everyone wants a super loud exhaust. On the manufacturing side, Dinan has access to some of the most advanced machinery for exhaust manufacturing in the business and produces some pretty high-quality systems - right here in the US. They're extremely high quality and pretty simple to install since everything just lines right up.

There's very little left on the table for more hp. BMW engineers have pretty much extracted just about every bit of out of the exhaust in stock form with the remaining roadblocks being octane, emissions and more boost being the only options that will yield you more hp.

I'm sure adding set of downpipes would really wake this up - so you still have options.

Overpriced? Their midpipe and axle back happen to be really reasonable compared to other options.

Updated the video in the original post with some quick stock sound we took today for a bit easier comparison. Video also has chapters included so you can click between the couple options real quick.

Plan is to get the stock dB measurements tomorrow now that the stock system is back on the vehicle as well.

Yes/no. Engineering ended up doing ALL the runs yesterday (some other stuff came up late last week so it got pushed to this week). In typical engineering fashion it was decided that to be as accurate as possible we needed to do all the measurements on the same day in same conditions as I guess weather can affect audio measurements or something (air density maybe?). I'm no audiophile so I will just nod my head and agree. Regardless, I am told it will get analyzed and the final comparison data sent to me by tomorrow afternoon. So let's just say I should post something by Friday to play it safe. Engineering "afternoons" and marketing "afternoons" don't typically align very well.

Truth be told today was kind of a wasted day as we were playing with the binaural audio equipment and experimenting with how to effectively integrate it into future marketing videos in addition to what they use it for on the R&D side. So marketing caused the additional day delay. Our bad. =)
