Winter Tire Options for G87 M2

Hey everyone,

I recently ordered a G87 M2. I'm really excited. Delivery is expected either September or October this year, but I live in the northeast and I'm looking for some winter tire solutions and it's proving more difficult than I was expecting.

As I understand it, the bolt pattern is 5x112, but there seems to be a difficulty finding wheels and tires on sites like tirerack and such for the G87.

Reading through the forum, BMW wheels for the G8X M3 or M4 should work for the G87 M2. Is that true? I found the 829M Package from Alloy Wheels Direct, but the price is a little steep at $5k. Can I purchase these wheels directly from my dealer?

Are there any other options for getting wheels and tires before winter? Would a set of G42 wheels work on the M2?

Thanks in advance. I really appreciate the help.

Not hard to find tires on tirerack at OEM sizing, I see several results. They don't list any wheels, that is true.

It is not however, super hard to find examples of people putting various OEM wheels on G87s successfully, including searching this here forum.

As a rule, yes, wheels that fit on the G80 and G82 will fit on the G87 since it's the same brake hardware.

However, if you run wheels smaller than 19, I'd suggest doing research because you may have problems fitting over the front brakes.

Likewise if you want wide tires (> 285) you'd need to check for rubbing problems.

I can't comment on the G42, I have no idea what the offset clearances are.

Thanks so much for the reply! I considered getting tires for the first winter and would swap them on the stock wheels until I figured out my wheel situation. But I found the 280 35R20 being the more difficult of the two tires to find a winter tire for.

For the winter, I plan to keep the tires as narrow as I can. It seems like most BMW packages are 9" in the front and 9.5" in the back. Also plan to stay at least 19".

I'm gonna reach out to my dealer to see if these 664 style wheels from the BMW store will fit on the G87. https://www.shopbmwusa.com/product/6...L-AND-TIRE-SET

They're not identical to the ones from Alloy Wheel Direct being squared off at 9" in the front and rear and it also lists this wheel/part for a G30 5 Series, but I'm reading the BMW parts store is a mess. The winter packages listed on there for the G87 M2 are for the F87 and apparently won't work.

In any case, I'll heed your advice and search the forums for other OEM setups that work on the G87. Thanks again!

Whatever winter packages are listed for the G80/82 will work on the G87.

The website is a bit vague. Is the price for one corner or for all four? That price isn’t terrible for a full set of 19s.

Dactyl, I inquired at Flemington BMW about the BMW-approved solution and he said that they should have a package available shortly. My delivery is maybe a month sooner than yours and I will post the info here when I get it. That being said, the "BMW solution" is more costly than the Tirerack solution, so I am researching the forums same as you are. If you find something, post some specs and pics please!

Thank you! I found the part number for for BMW's Winter Wheel set up that fits the G87 M2. It's 36-11-5-A71-A86 and 36-11-5-A71-89. I just purchased these from my dealer. They cost $4,150.60 plus tax.

It should be a BMW 829M 19x9" and 19.9.5" wheels with Michelin Pilot Aplin Performance Winter Tires at 275 35 R19. My only concern is how the square stance will look/perform on the M2's staggered stance. These tires are very close to the stock rear set up in terms of height and width, but they're a little larger than the stock front set up.

The dealer said that they don't start taking orders for winter wheel packages until the end of August and are subsequently manufactured in October. So I should be one of the first orders and receive the package in time for winter.

What terrible timing tho. Lots of people have to swap out to Winters before October. Blah.

I might have misheard, but the indication is that I would have the wheels by October. But yeah, that's a good point. I used to put my winter wheels on the first or second week of November here in NJ.

So just as an update. My wheels arrived already. Apparently the first in the country this season lol. So if you need a winter wheel and tire package, order them now. They’re shipping.

I really want to make the stock wheels work for winter tires so I save that money for summer wheels... What size tire do you suggest in the rear? 285/30-20? 275/30-20? (and 275/35-19 up front).

I'd suggest 285s.

275mm is 10.8 inches, and the oem wheels are 10.5 inches wide.

If the tire is only .3 inches wider than the wheel, the rubber won't protect the wheels at all, and it will be very easy to get curb rash.

Unfortunately I can't find anything at that size, at 275/35-19 and 275/30-20 I find the Mercedes Sottozero 2 up front and the Audi Sottozero 2 in the back.

Maybe I am too early in the season? I just want to be ready when my car gets delivered in December (or later) when it very well might be below freezing.

There are 'MICHELIN PILOT SPORT ALL SEASON 4' in 285s.

Do you need pure winter tires?

Ah, the 'PIRELLI WINTER SOTTOZERO 3 285/30R20 99V XL' has been discontinued. That sucks.

Obviously yeah, if all the winter 285s have been cancelled, 275 is what you gotta use, just be careful around curbs.

By coincidence, I needed to get a tire leak fixed today so I chatted with a tire guy. He looked in his own warehouse systems and said that for 285, he couldn't find any winter tires either.

So looks like the options are 1) all seasons, or 2) using 275s.

I think winters would be better with RWD in snow and ice etc... But if I have to I will go all seasons. All seasons were fine on my G42 with AWD but I would have eventually replaced them with winters.

Thanks for confirming what I was seeing!

Although stock is a bit limited at the moment, PMC Tire (https://pmctire.com/tires) is showing 5 winter tyres in 285/30-20 size (PA4, P-Zero Winter, Sottozero 3, Sottozero Serie II and Yokohama V905)

Yeah, as an example, I have occasionally found a Pzero Winter here or there, but apparently it was discontinued a couple years back. So I'm finding them in 1s or 2s.

I tend to shy away from discontinued tires because replacement is a hassle. In an emergency, I don't want the tire guy to say "sorry man, I can't find you a tire."

So just be careful and buy an extra if you go this way, because if you puncture one next winter you may no longer be able to find a replacement.

I actually like the stock wheels so I'm looking for a set of wheels for the winter with either Conti or Michelin all seasons, but I'm not sure what's a good option that will a) fit and b) not be super expensive.

I reached out to my CA to see if I could add this set to my M2 deal, but he claims that the set listed above “doesn’t come up” in the system (even though if you Google them, they come up in a lot of different BMW dealers in the search) and pointed me towards the “m2” wheels on the bmw USA site, but they are for the F87. Either way he also said that they don’t qualify for the BMWCCA discount.

That is very interesting. Maybe try checking with your parts department? I just picked up the wheels from my dealer this weekend and got them wrapped up, ready for the winter. I didn't get the BMWCCA discount either, but they basically pricematched the prices I showed them from other BMW dealers if that helps.

Just as an update, I thought they would ship with Michelins, but they ended up being wrapped with Pirelli P Zero Winters. I'm not upset though. They look solid and the review on the Pirelli's look good.
