G42 Aftermarket Wheels & Tires
Okay, I know many are like "whaaaat"? there are no wheels known to fit the G42 yet. This is true.
However, this thread is clearly coming, and I've been doing my homework. I should know soon if my calculations and interpolations are accurate. I take delivery of a G42 in a week or sooner. It's a 230i M Sport/Handling Package (only) car. I have purchased wheels and tires from TireRack that fit a G20. I know my wheel size and ET of the new wheels, and worked to match the wheel size and ET of the M240s Pro Pack wheels. The OE wheels are 19x8.5 ET25 up front. I am doing a square set up, so I focused on this axle only. The aftermarket wheels are 19x8.5 with an ET of 30. From all the videos I saw, I think I have 5mm of room for an outward moving wheel...we'll see soon. My goal has been as much handling grip as possible. Engine horsepower is great, but "horsepower" for the turns is more usable on the street, IMO. Tire is also an upgrade size. That same OE wheel above is wrapped in 245/35-19...However, I am using 255/35-19 Michelin PSS (PS4 are out of stock). This new size tire is slight smaller in diameter than the OE front tires coming on my car now (225/40-19), and of course wider. I know I'm pushing limits and using educated guesses, but if they fit, I'll post pix...on the understanding that wheel "poke" is a subjective thing, but clearance is not. Of course, I'll be selling the wheels coming off the car on eBay. eBay prices now are well above what I'm paying for the new set too! Yes, proper wheel options are so important, especially for a high horsepower sports car like this. I've ordered the HP wheel/cooling package and will need a winter wheelset ASAP for the US Northeast where I'm located. I will try to do some independent research too, and add to the knowledge as well. I think tire options are fairly well covered. It would be great to figure out which wheel manufacturers would fit. I was very happy with my Apex wheels for my E90, and was able to transfer them to my F22. I don't know if Apex makes wheels for the G generation though. I know the G42 is based on the same platform as the G 3/4 series, but I'm a little leery of assuming it's the exact same specs! We're in this together to figure out as first adopters.

Well, it appears a 255 square set up is good-to-go for the G42.
I just fitted 255/35-19 (Michelin PSS) on 19x8.5 wheels with an ET of 30 (OZ Superturismo LM) on all four corners to my brand new 230i, M Sport (yes, with the M Sport brakes). I pulled off 791M Double-spoked black wheels off. Those fronts are 225/40s, so I was pretty concerned about the much larger size. (They'll be on eBay very soon) I still need to drive it hard, but I did full lock, and jacked up the opposite corners and saw no contact, nor any "near misses." The wheels push out more, even more than the rears which are the same size tire and wheel. I am very particular about where the wheel lines up with the body...I hate it when it looks sucked in the fender, and hate it "poking" beyond the fenders. These are near-perfect...I'd prefer a few mm inward on the rear, but they appear to clear the fender well. Fronts look perfect to me. Of course, style, wheel type, stance are all subjective. Rubbing and contact are not subjective and I think this setup is good to go regarding that. In the fourth pic, the rears sit outward more than the fronts. Seems like there may be more room to push the fronts out, but not the back. Rears seem at max outward orientation. The big questions some may have is 9" wide wheels. ET will really matter there. I think the right ET will allow a 9" wheel up front with possible 265 fitment, but I'm not willing to buy-n-try. For now, my 255s will meet my needs. UPDATE: I weighed each wheel. My new wheel tipped the scale at 50.1 lbs. The 791M front was 50.2 lbs (yet so much smaller!), and the 791M rear was 52.6lbs. Not much of a savings in weight as I was hoping, but they numbers are what they are, and I'm glad I did not add weight. Last edited by Dinosoar; 11-27-2021 at 06:11 PM.. |

It is nice to read that ET30 fits all around. Can you confirm if the stud pattern for the G42 is 5x112?

Yes it is. I ordered this from TireRack as if it was a 2022 330i. Those hub patterns are in fact 5x112 according to my order sheet, and product page, on this wheel.

Sharp looking car! Congratulations.
I had 255's square on my 2019 240 for summer, although they were 17". A little poke, but I was alright with it. It really improved the stability of the car over the stock RFTs. I only had slight rub on high speed compression dips, mostly a great ride. I've ordered the HP 245/255 setup and will need a set of dedicated winter wheels. Your research and purchase has really helped in my decision process, thanks again! Now I just have to wait for delivery. Stuck in "assembly in progress " forever!

They are the performance snows rather than the studless heavier WS series. I had some on a previous 335 xdrive, and they drove well in most conditions. I guess it might come down to availability and price for the final decision on all this. Performance difference will probably be minimal.

If you have those wheels somewhere easy to access, could you read the offset number cast into the wheel? There is no information available about G42 wheel offset anywhere online that I can find, so it would be great to have that confirmed from a wheel that BMW put on a G42.
I have a set of BMW wheels that I used on my 2019 M550iX. They have the size and offset numbers cast into one of the arms and can be seen when looking at the back side of the wheel. I have attached a photo. The offset info is shown as "IS30". Thanks!

791M Wheel Data
Here you go...
To add to the confusion on backspacing/ETs, the OE wheels noted here are 40ET in the back, but the O.Z.s I fit to the car are listed as 30ET, YET, the O.Z. wheels push out further. And, they're the same size wheel as the OE wheel (19x8.5). My BMW Genius said it may be how the two manufactures measure the weel outer face or something. I got lucky, on fitment, I guess, and the point here is you never know fitment until you fit them on. GL out there! Last edited by Dinosoar; 12-11-2021 at 05:31 PM.. |
