G87-M2 Intake Air Filter Replacement & Charcoal Filter Delete: DIY

Here are a few pictures and a quick DIY for those looking to drop in air filter replacement and also the charcoal filter delete.

Time Required = 10-15 minutes (especially if you have the correct torx tool with proper length handle).
Skill Required = 1 out of 5 (as basic as it gets)
Tools required = T25 (Torx 25). Ideally adjustable length extension handle. I used my computer repair tool kit which has a telescoping handle for various lengths. You do not want to use a "normal" torx key tool (the one with like 7 different sizes that flip out). You will not have room to get down to 2 bolts.

Instructions:

1. Loosen the T25 screws around the air filter housing (no need to remove strut tower bar). No need to remove the band clamp either (which connects the intake hose to the intake filter housing). You do NOT need to fully remove these screws, just loosen them until the threads are out of the "bottom" half of the airbox housing (the threads will keep them nicely attached to the top half when you pry the airbox open).

2. Pry open the filter housing

3. Remove the yellow OEM air filter

4. Remove the 2 charcoal filters (2 per side, 4 total on the car). Do this by pulling them straight through the plastic "grating." You should NOT have to break anything, they are not in there that tightly. There are 2 different size charcoal filters. One pulls out easily from the end and the other pulls out more easily from the middle of the filter.

5. Drop in the new filter, and be sure it sits nicely (tight) on the housing lip or else you won't be able to close the air box securely. The moulded plastic gasket around the outside of the filter should be obvious how it drops in (at least it was on my BMC filters).

6. Close the airbox back up and tighten all the T25 again.

7. Go drive with more power and test your butt dyno

I just got a 25 6MT and when I checked mine, it didnt have them. It doesnt even have the diamond housing the charcoal filters fit into. I thought was odd. All my other G series M cars had them.

Curious if the airbox (or at least the lid where the charcoal filter sits) is a different part number 2024 vs 2025 then.

Are you in the USA? I think these are only required in the US due to California regulations.

I think my 1st picture shows a QR code, maybe a part number to compare against for anyone with a 2025.

Did it last weekend. Thanks for the heads up! Didn't even realize this was a "thing"when installing the BMC filters. Improved butt dyno? Possibly? Easy DIY.

I doubt the sound will be much different because the filters are still inside the airbox. However, I’m certainly not the best person to answer that question (nor do I have any decibel meter data &#128512.

Some say they notice an increase in sound on high RPM, i dont find it noticeable.

if you want more sound, get an intake not just filters.

My 2025 also does not have the charcoal filters. Purchased brand new and just did Dinan drop in filters.

Interesting. I wonder if CA dropped the requirement or what else changed? Maybe that’s how the ‘25 gained all the extra Hp 😀

I just traded in my 25 6MT M2 for an auto M2 and it also does not have the charcoal filters. They must have removed them for good.

My 24 had them and it was a late 24 build.

Same (July build 2024) with charcoals.

Sounds definitive that 2025 does not have them — super curious if the parts are different as that would make for a simple charcoal delete.

Here are the G87 part numbers for the air box:

13-71-8-095-807 (left)
13-71-8-095-805 (right)

Surprisingly cheap — about $30 each.

These are parts for all G87s through 2024 though. I don't (yet) see a 2025-specific part number. If/when there is it will be a cheap way to get a clean charcoal delete.

So the tops include the carbon traps. I wonder during a smog certificate test they will even look in there.

Unfortunately, I have no experience to offer my thoughts on that question. NJ only does tail pipe emission check with CEL check; never seen anyone ever open the hood of the car. No experience in how CA handles those test though.

They do open the hood here in Cali, I didn't put the do not replace stickers from the BMC filters, although those are CARB legal.
