Which modern sports car will offer best return on investment?
So I am thinking of perhaps finally going the 2 car route and adding in addition to the m240i, a normally aspirated manual car that won't depreciate and may even appreciate and is reasonably reliable without huge maintenance costs. Max budget is 150k ish.
possible candidates include: 2010-2015 R8 v10 manual 2015-2016 991.1 GTS manual I can't really come up with anything else that is normally aspirated and manual within that budget that I can see depreciating less than the r8 and doesn't come with outrageous maintenance/upkeep. I am leaning towards the R8 as it seems to me that while the new GTS's will not be normally aspirated, there are still the GT cars that are normally aspirated and manual. The manual r8 v10's will literally be the last of their kind. I've also already kinda done the porsche thing having had 2 cayman 981's, never had a screaming v10! Any other suggestions? Can't believe you didn't include the Gen V Viper. Beats every car on this list in every respect, including the Murci

Gen V Viper is end goal for me. While I'm definitely not an expert, I've been monitoring prices for a couple years now. The normal trim and spec'd ones are slowly depreciating, but overall they're holding value well. The TA 2.0, ACR, and ACR-E are all stable, or slightly appreciating. Obviously the rare (and one off) colors are much more valuable than the common colors. My personal favorite are the yorange TA's, either 1.0 or 2.0. They're hard to find, a pretty rare color, and holding value very well. I don't know if I would consider them an investment though, or any car for that matter.

You need to spend more. Special run porsches are the best bet, i don't think GTS will appreciate. Hold, maybe but not appreciate. I don't think an R8 will either.

Cars are generally terrible investments, why not invest that $150K into something else?

I have to agree, when buying a car, I would not think of it as an investment unless it's already gone up 200%.
Just get whatever you want in a car. Or if you are looking to invest try other means like real estate.

GT4 is probably your best bet for holding value but unless you're buying a 993 Porsche I don't think you're going to find much of anything that even has a chance to appreciate. 991 GTS will probably settle into the $65-80k range long-term like the 997 GTS has.

There's plenty of cars that fit this criteria IMO, but the 991.1 GTS is definitely not one of them. I personally don't think they're worth what they're going for

not much in this area of the market that is going to go up. But a lot of cars will kind of stay the same.
458s have reached near the bottom of their depreciation curve. very solid car I've had mine for 3 years. pretty bulletproof in the exotic world. not a v10 but does have a 9000 rpm v8 and is faster than an R8 and you don't have awd cutting into the fun. R8 V10 6 speed Gen V Viper v12 vantage 6 speed

A current 911T might also appreciate in a few years after the initial drop which is happening right now. I agree with other comments. Very few cars appreciate in value and even the ones that are may not continue. |

They don't seem to be depreciating. I own multiple Gen Vs and I don't think there's anyone on this forum who has more knowledge or experience with those cars than me. In fact, I was one of the first to ever see a Viper while it was still under development. One advantage over these other cars like Porsche, Ferrari, Lambo, Audi, or really anything else, is that the repair costs are ridiculously cheap compared to these other cars. Oil changes can be done for under $100!

A car as an investment is almost impossible. First of all you have to leave it at low mileage. Else deprecation is too high. Then there is inflation, maintenance, insurance, storage and if you use the car the cost of driving it. Then there is the comparison to a normal decent financial investment. Even a “safe” investment should have a yearly payback of about 2-3%. So you might get a car at 150k and sell it for 200k ten years later but it might not be an investment at all and people who are car enthusiasts tend to forget that and only look at absolute numbers.

Don't even look at an AM. Everything I've seen from long-term owners has them pegged as a POS. I drove a DB9 Volante' - it was a joke. The build quality seemed like a bad kit car at best. Compared to a Gallardo, it was horrible.
Cars are truly bad "investments" unless you got in on the ground floor (like the 1M or the original Ford GT from the 2000's). That being said, it looks like you're more interested in something that could hold onto its value and retain the most value - and a bonus would be an increase in value long-term. R8 with a manual - the later cars with the V10 and a manual would be stellar for sure. Gallardo with a manual - not as bad as you'd think for maintenance - again, plenty of sources out there to figure out what years are good. Viper can be a fun car, however, I'm not sure they'll go up in value. I think it'll level off at best. They just didn't sell well to start with so it tells you something right away. Not that many people wanted them. 964 or 993 - have been holding steady with prices, but they're pretty high. Not sure if they're moving or not at those elevated prices 997 - I think you missed the boat. The prices have gone up quite a bit and are holding pretty high (a nice car is around $60K!) 997 GT3 I would think is the best of the bunch. You can get them for under $100K and it will last. It has a manual transmission to boot.
