Hey folks... Just got an allocation and expecting winter delivery in Vermont so I am trying to figure out tires.

Looking for some advice/objective perspective from the knowledgeable folks on this forum.

The G42 I am trading on has a square setup with 19x9" ET25 Apex VS-5RS that currently have 255/35-19 PS4S mounted for summer.

For the G87 I will need winter tires right away, so figure my option are:

1. Try to find winter tires that fit the stock G87 wheels, preferably run flats. This is appealing because they are cast heavy wheels, but I am concerned about even finding winter tires at this size. Sell the Apex wheels and buy some new wheels after I have worn out the stock summer tires.

2. Run the amazing VS-5RS with winter tires. I think I can find some 245/40-19 run flats if not 255/35-19. I love these wheels, but I feel a bit silly running them on the salty Vermont winter roads then putting back on cast wheels for summer.

3. Buy some other winter wheels.

What would you do?

Same boat, I was wondering if I could run winter tires on the stock wheels and then buy a set of nicer wheels for the summer?

Just let Google be your friend. Tire Rack and Discount Tire have winter fronts and rears available. I am sure other suppliers do, as well.

I assume you don't want to run the Apexes in summer because they are only 9 inches? Limiting you to, what, 275mm or less?

If I was you, I'd go with a tire swap onto the stock rims, and sell the Apexes. However, I'd personally go with non RFTs because (in Boston) I've found RFTs to be too stiff and they tend to cause bent rims on potholes. But YMMV, that's just my personal taste.

I'd also bank the cash from selling the VS-5Rs and buy new VS-5Rs next year as a permanent summer set (staggered). I don't like the stock wheels very much, TBH. Heavy, hard to clean.

Exactly, too small for summer. I think this is probably my move as I love the wheels on my g42 - at least if I can find tires.

I was thinking RFTs just in winter because plugging a hole in salty, wet, slush sounds awful. I totally agree that RFTs suck compared to go flats, especially ride quality.

BMW's parts catalog is trash. Lots of miscategorized parts, or missing parts.

Check out Tire Rack's write up on running smaller...higher tires for winter performance...Summary: narrower tires don't aquaplane as much in the wet and handle the frozen forms of water better
Bonus...higher aspect ratio = more sidewall to handle potholes filled with rain or snow...

So grab a set of take off's from a 230/240/330 with 19" wheel upgrades..you get 19x8 27mm offset wheels style 783...heavy Chinese castings! Run 225/45-19 tires and your within 0,30" of the stock rear 20" tires! Plus you can pick up a set of these almost new for less than $1K....so plenty left over to by snows or whatever.

I took these wheels off my new 230i X drive to put on some BMW stock 18's and run 225/45 all season NRFT tires instead of the 225/40 RFT "rocks" that came with my car! Don't need 10/10ths performance anymore (reflexes and eyes aren't what they used to be)...Bonus..wife likes the smoother ride!

I agree with this in principle, and did the same kind of thing with my e90 winters.

However, I do worry about fitment on non-oem sizes. Lots of people running into fitment problems against the strut or fender linings. Also the G87 oem offset is only 20mm. I would worry that 27mm will pull the wheel in too close to the brake hardware or strut.

It's just a really hard question to answer without knowing what width you want to run.

If you can live without running a pure winter, there are Michelin Pilot Sport All Seasons available in OEM sizes, both front and rear. That's the simplest answer because it avoids all issues of fitment and sizing. The downside is that your M2 should stay home in bad storms.

Trying to run a winter tire such as a Blizzak. Daily driver except in an active winter storm.

Interestingly, BMW's winter tire/wheel packed seems like it comes with winter tires that would fit the stock wheels...

Yeah, no way I would do that. I would do a square aftermarket setup first. At this point if I can't find winter tires alone I will just run the Conti DWS06+ all seasons and be more careful about when I take the car out. I am just not willing to spend money on winter wheels when the stock wheels are so heavy. I would much rather that money go towards light weight forged summer wheels.

FYI, dealer was able to get Pirelli Winter Sottozero Series 2 in time for delivery, so going with those on stock wheels.

Anyone with a G42 want to buy some apex wheels?
