The Nuvi will not integrate the many electronics in the 1er. Navigation is not the only use for the unit.

You're absolutely right, but I still couldn't justify $2100.

I could not agree more. On a budget, the NAV was never a consideration at that price, especially with the Garmins so cheap now. Plus I think the pop-up screen ruins the look and feel of the dashboard, not to mention the annoying i-drive system itself. I have the i-drive on my current 530xi, and consider it a royal pain in the neck; I'd much rather have back a few simple pre-set buttons on my radio to find what I'm looking for....call me old-fashioned .

One thing to keep in mind, as I've read elsewhere in this forum, many auto insurance carriers regard BMW Assist as a tracking device along the lines of LoJack and offer discounts on coverage.

What other rationale is there to combine these two accessories?

Who ever really uses the "BMW Assist"? Just look at GM's lack of success with the same thing, ie: their "OnStar" service. It's a neat feature if it's free, but otherwise its a waste of money.

Buy a AAA membership for $30 instead ! and a bluetooth headset for $50!

Given the state laws requiring hands-free phones, BMW should just build the hand-free phone into the price of the car, like any other required safety item such as seatbelts and airbags ! Total B.S.

I couldn't stomach the $750 ripoff....I passed on this option.
Just so you know, a BMW TCU costs well over $1000 by itself. The sunroof module (which includes the SOS button) is several hundred dollars. Installation and retrofit programming is several hundred more. How is $750 a ripoff?

Yes it works as if you had installed from factory, with full integration with the NAV screen
