Muffler Delete and J-Pipe
And so I've finally passed the 1,200-mile mark (break-in period) and am now looking into exhaust setups. My goal is to be louder than stock but not too loud (neighbor friendly-ish ) with minimal to no drone, if possible.
So I start with 4 and 5 stars rated muffler shops within a 100 mile radius (SoCal). I have quotes from a few shops including one that a fellow member here (Bimmer Bill/YT) used. These were for a muffler delete with bullet race mufflers and quad matte black double-walled tips. One shop suggested that he can do the above and add J-pipes as well. This is the first time I've heard of these and he said he does a lot of them for muscle cars. As I did some reading regarding J-pipes, it turns out that there's some math and some trial and error involved - unless somebody has already done it. I don't think anybody has done J-pipes in the G42 forum yet. I found this table below but for the CTS-V. Can anybody here help me figure it out for the G42 B58? - - - ETA Update on Post #11 FWIW here’s the end product. I love it! . Last edited by ZM240i; 09-11-2023 at 11:46 AM.. |

I wish you good luck, but I'd recommend holding off on that now.
It's not ideal to risk your new car's exhaust by having work done at a local shop. Allow reputable exhaust companies time for research, development, and testing to produce the best possible setup for your car. Patience will pay off in the end.

Added J pipe to my m240i when doing muffler delete. After all the math I decided to add 31inch j pipe. It only reduced drone for certain RPM. Not worth it. I will highly recommend get a aftermarket catback system.

For those who have done a muffler delete on the B58 engine, at what RPM do you experience the worst drone?
- - - And here's an excellent video if you wanna be schooled. He details all the principles and math involved in eliminating drone. |

So I've finally done it. My goals were:
1). muffler delete 2). matte black double-walled tips 3). exhaust sound louder than stock 4). minimal to zero drone, if possible 5). install race bullet mufflers/resonators 6). add J-Pipes per shop recommendation I have only driven the car for less than 10 miles from the shop as of now. So far, I do know that there is no drone at freeway cruising speeds. |

Any plans to reproduce or sell design for someone else to do it? I am hoping for a more economical solution w/less weight and more sound. Sonic |
