"Replace Battery" Warning

I just had window tinting and ppf installed on my car. When I got the car back, the "replace battery" warning is on. The installer said that this is common since they leave the doors open for extended periods of time. He said that they had a trickle charger on the battery during this process, so the battery should still be good.

Have any of you experienced this? How do I turn off this warning?

Did you try power cycling the car by taking off the negative power terminal for a few minutes? That or if you have a code reader to clear any stored codes.

Can you use Bimmercode to clear codes?

Try going on a long drive to recharge the battery. If you have a battery tender you can try leaving it on the car overnight.

As far as I know, there is no way to get that light to go away by just driving it. It's below the threshold and will need to be replaced.

Of course you can also code it off but not something you can do without the proper tools.

Will the battery ever go above the threshold or has it been ruined and need to be replaced? I drove it around for a bit yesterday but it is still at 80-85%.

I'm not sure, I've only ever used it to code my F87. I've never cleared codes in a BMW but I used Torque with my Focus RS to do it numerous times. But if what you said in your last post is true, that the battery isn't above 80% then there might be something else going on. I couldn't imagine a brand new battery getting killed by a drain like that but who knows.

Sounds like they owe you a new battery.

Maybe. I hope that somehow this is resolved without needing a new battery.

They claim to have connected it to a trickle charger. If that is true, I wonder what happens to all of the people up north who store their cars for the winter and use a trickle charger to keep the battery alive.

BimmerLink (not BimmerCode) is the app for clearing codes or to register a battery.

txmav,
This is what I'd do if I were in your situation.
  1. Fully charge the battery either by going for a long drive and make sure not to turn off the engine, disable Start/Stop etc. Drive at least 45m or more. You can also use a trickle charger overnight.

  2. After charging check the health of the battery with a multimeter. If you don't have a multimeter look up nearby auto parts stores that offer free battery health inspections to determine if the battery is healthy or if it's degraded and needs to be replaced.

  3. If the battery is healthy get BimmerLink and register the battery. Normally this wouldn't be ideal as registering is only meant for new batteries, but your car is so new it won't make a difference.
◦ If however, the battery's health is degraded it'll need to be replaced. You can save a few bucks by doing it yourself and registering it with BimmerLink or get it done at the dealership.
Good Luck.

I talked to an SA at my dealer and he said it'll need to be replaced and won't go above the threshold.

I guess we need to ask them to disconnect the battery when doing a job like this?

No. Battery had to be defective. Leaving the doors open even without a trickle charger might run it down but wouldn’t kill a healthy battery.

If new or close to new no way that by itself should have killed it fully and not recharge. I'd guess something was defective before and this just brought it to light.

A new battery should not discharge to that level. It appears the battery was bad to begin.

Agreed. We (dealership) see this occur often. The vehicle is constantly awake if a door(s), hood, or trunk is left open which equals the vehicle also searching for the key to start. If any of the above or all are left open for many hours it will significantly draining the battery.

They likely didn't use a trickle charger as they claimed but good luck having them reimburse for a new battery. I had the same happen on my E92 years ago when it was at the body shop to get a scraped bumper painted. Thankfully a long drive cleared the battery warning, but it seems with newer models it's not so simple. I still wouldn't write off an expensive battery until it's been properly inspected and shown to be bad.
