Had the same issue with my car (was at 17,000km and the iDrive was calling for rear brakes in 2,200km). Mentioned it when I was in for an oil change and they performed a software update and the interval changed back to a more reasonable 30,000km.

The on-board computer now says 20000 miles for the front brakes and 22000 miles remaining for the rear brakes. My brakes are good but with 30000 miles on the car and 20 - 22k miles remaining, I may have to take the car to the mountains or a track for some heavy braking in order to wear them out prior to the 50k maintenance warranty running out.

1. Without pressing the brake/clutch, press the start/stop button 2. Wait for the service reminder to disappear 3. Press and hold the odometer reset button. You will notice your trip meter reset and then go back to the value it once was. Keep holding for a couple more seconds At this point, service values that can be reset will come up. Use the odometer reset button to scroll through the menu. 4. At the value you want to reset, press and hold the odometer reset button. "Reset possible" will change to "Reset?" 5. Press and hold odometer reset button again until value is reset 6. Press the start/stop button to start car or turn off car |

Im getting a big red message on the iDrive screen thing saying drive moderately, go directly to BMW etc.
Checked the service info and it says rear pads are over due. Theres a good 5-6 mm left on them. Tried the reset above and went through the motions but said 'Reset Unsuccessful' after id held the trip button in while all the little bars on the dash filled. Is the sensor faulty or is this what its designed to do? Lastly - should you replace the sensor with the pad (believe there is one sensor for front, one for rear) Many thanks |

If the system doesn't let you reset on the dash even after changing the pads and the sensor, you're likely going to need someone who has ISTA-D to reset the interval for you. Default is 25,000km.

The listed life is only a guess. The iDrive has no way to measure pad thickness. It's only when the sensor trips that you get a more or less accurate reading of remaining life. Only by pulling the wheels and measuring the pad thickness, on both the inside and outside pads, can you know what's actually remaining.
