255 to 265 up front?
I just picked up a new Portimao blue m240i. It's a fantastic car but it came with the all-season tires. I want to continue to run a square setup and really feel the car could benefit from a 255 or wider summer tire.
Has anyone been able to get a 255 or larger tire up front on a 9 in wide wheel? I think the clearances would probably work but it would be really tight. Any idea what offset wheel I would need at 9 in wide? I may be a guinea pig on this one and if it doesn't work up front do a staggered setup. |

That would make for about half an inch of tire hang on either side of the wheel has anyone done a 255 tire or larger yet up there, would tires rub with sidewall flex?

Rear Spacing
I have a 255 square set up on 8.5" wheels with a 30 ET. I think there's room for the wheel to move outward with a spacer.
Pix in another thread (G42 Aftermarket Wheels & Tires). Pix show inner strut clearance and outer fender alignment. I think you can do a 9" rim, though the 255s look solid on an 8.5 rim, which is the OE setup out back, but I think that's the max tire width for any sporty handling on a 8.5" rim. The only caution I'd cite is the rear is pushed out more than the front with my set up and I am not sure a 9" rim would work with a 30ET. That said, a 9" rim with 20-25ET with spacers for the front would probably work. Last edited by Dinosoar; 01-28-2022 at 04:52 PM.. |

See photos. Upfront these are on 225 all season, I’d say there is maybe 20mm inside. I’d say safely 255 on a 9”. I think 265 maybe cause more problems than it’s worth for the gain.
I want 9” 255 in front at 10” 275/285 rears ultimately. |

However, up front, there's a different turning radius (tighter on 230). My Genius says that's for the front drive dynamics at play. Not sure that'll play into wheel fitment on M240s if the turning radius is less. |

Unless he/she had prior training in that field (unlikely, or they wouldn't be working as a "genius"), don't trust the word of your "BMW Genius" when it comes to advice on mechanical tire grip, or mechanics in general. That is not what they are trained in for the job of "BMW Genius".
