Question for people who have a sunroof

Hello everyone!
I'm new here and I have a question. I'm determined to buy an new M2 and I'm wondering whether it's worth buying a sunroof. I know it's useful, but I'm worried about whether it makes any noise on potholed roads, uneven roads, or curbs. What are your experiences with the sunroof on the M2?
Thanks

What?! It’s a SUNROOF. Just like any other car. These questions getting out of hand.

Double ditto. I have the sunroof and no issues. Only quirky thing is that it only opens about two thirds the way due to the roofline of the car.

You will be fine. It's a BMW, not a Yugo. Sunroofs are nice if you like driving with it open or the added light. However, if you are tall you might want to opt for the CF roof as it offers a noticeable increase in headroom and the cool factor is there as well. If you can't find an M2 to sit in to test out the headroom, find a 2 series like an M240i. The headroom with the sunroof is very close if not the same.

headroom is fine with sunroof cause the seats go nice and low, at 6'3 I'm good. If you plan on tracking it (helmet) and you're really tall it could be a issue maybe.

it definitely makes the cabin feel bigger and way brighter obviously, one of those things you either want or don't there's no wrong answer

BMW sunroofs are built in the manner of a round peg in a square hole. Rain will breach the sunroof even on a brand new car. Ok, back to reality...the following is better advice than any response as to the sunroof on a new car.

I would stay off potholed roads, they will destroy your alignment and potentially damage your rims and tires.

If you are hitting curbs, the sunroof is the least of your problems.

My M2 has the CF roof.

But my 2024 BMW 230xi has a sunroof. In over 3000 miles have not even bothered to try the 230xi's sunroof.

(And a number of cars way back have come with a sunroof. Bought the cars off the lot. I would not order a car with a sunroof.)

While with previous cars I tried the sunroof I never found one I could like. (The sunroof on my 2020 Dodge Challenger Scat Pack was the best of the bunch. But even so I never used it after trying it out.)

But I found the sunroofs not that pleasurable experience. Too much noise, wind in the cabin, and I loathe sitting in direct sun. Besides with rare exceptions where I live and drive one either has to have the heater/AC on to deal with winter cold and humidity or the A/C on to deal with the summer heat and humidity. A sunroof open just messes with the heater/AC function and efficiency.

And I learned via the bad experiences of others to not leave a car parked with the sunroof or top down. At any time there's the risk of a bird bomb in the interior of the car or even on the driver or a passenger.

Or worse -- another car owner's experience -- someone dumped a large cup of soda/ice into his car's passenger seat when he parked the car (in Fredericksburg TX) on the main street with the top down.

Sure an open sunroof it not quite the target as a soft top down but I'd be worried of someone tossing trash or even a lit cigarette in through the sunroof. (I have seen buttheads try to toss lit cigarette butts in my Boxster's side air intakes.)

But some owners love the sunroof.

If you can get a test ride/drive in an M2 with a sunroof see how you like it. If you like it order the car with one. Or don't.

I had a sunroof on the previous car and was happy to be able to order the M2 without one (and got a CF roof as a result, win/win!).

The headroom was the reason. It makes the interior much less claustrophobic. We used our other one less than a dozen times in years and we live in Florida where you think it would be great.

In fact, even with whatever coating they put on it, and a sliding cover, it radiated heat into the cockpit when closed and covered on a hot day. And we do get a few of those here!

There is always the chance of a mechanical or drain failure causing problems. If you use it a lot, worth it. If not, maybe not.

Nothing against them in use. They can be a nice way to get light and enjoy good weather days. Just like a swimming pool that you never use if it is mostly closed and covered.

In sunny Arizona our roof is open in the morning and late afternoon. Wouldn’t have it any other way, glorious.
In mid-day here, however, it’s intolerable. A real life microwave oven experience.

The sunroof, IMO, is largely dependent on your overall 12 month weather and secondarily the expense/appearance of a carbon fiber option.
Or not.

YMMV

No issues whatsoever.

Now that I think about it, this is my 4th car and all of them have had sunroofs.

I wasn't going out there looking for them, but still...

And after about 100k of miles that I've put on each of the three previous cars, no issues.

And with the 1,750 or so miles I've put on this car so far, no issues.

My only sunroof comment is not related to the M2.

BMW sunroof drains are known to clog easily, ensure you know how to blow yours out with compressed air. Something about their drain tubing/nipple. Lots of posts about water on the passenger floor.

That said, if I wanted one I'd get one, that would not stop me.

It's one of my favorite parts about the car. I do almost wish that the cover was manual versus a powered, but I'll get used to it. I love that even with the cover closed you still see some light through it.

Experience is overwhelmingly positive for me. overall the carbon roof is cool as heck, but i love cruising with the windows town and sunroof open. havnt noticed any quality issues like you described with it. I echo another commentor, it is a BMW bud...

I was on the fence for weeks trying to decide between the CF or Sun roof.

So glad I went with the sun roof. Most of my cars had sun roofs and BMW did a first rate job in its execution. Provisions to support pop-up, slide back, and sun shade.

No rattles, no issues.

The only caveat, and it's a small one, is that you need to take care when waxing to keep wax off the seal.
