Brake Dust (Cleaning Help)

Alright, what are you using to successfully clean the brake dust off these wheels?

It’s soooo bad.

When I used to wash my own car Sonax Full Effect was the best wheel cleaner I had ever used. I tried many over the course of a decade.

Remedy the problem at the source. Replace the pads with high performance ceramic variants . Carbotech, EBC Redstuff, Porterfield, etc. 😂

does the car throw a error on starups if you get pads that don't have wear sensors?

Which pad? Street or Street Sport?

Also, are they equivalent in performance or are there caveats?

Too frugal to replace perfectly good pads so I use this after trying many tools. Works with almost every soap.

Garage List
2023 M2  [8.00]
I use Adams wheels spray, spray it off, use my wheel mitt and the brush that Carefree posted above. Done and done.

Not at all. All of the aftermarket pads that are mentioned in this thread are model/yr specific and include wear sensors. I have been using Carbotech from the start. They have been excellent in terms of bite and dust very little. In fact, the pads shed a small amount gray powder which is easily cleaned.

I used that brush for a long time, and over time it damaged the wheels.

Perhaps it was due to operator error or poor quality wheels.

oh okay, I saw the isweep pads had a option to include the sensor so assumed the others didn't have it.

I'm with Carefree on the annoyance of needing to replace a new functional part, but the thought of blasting my new frozen paint (ceramic coated, but still) with clouds of brake dust is painful. And cleaning brake dust bombed wheels is the bane of my existence.

Would be best to replace them immediately if I'm gunna do it anyway, get them bedded to fresh rotors and avoid clogging the calipers up with mounds of dust. What's another $400

I’ll assume your wheels and calipers are ceramic coated like mine.

I recently purchased a foam cannon to use with the brush previously pictured. I can get all 4 wheels spotless and brake dust free in about 15 minutes. YMMV

I would not use that brush on a painted surface. It looks too abrasive.

“Looks too abrasive”

That’s funny.

A picture of that brush doesn’t represent texture, stiffness, flexibility, etc. Maybe you should read the reviews.

Do you buy wine or food based on a picture? I hope not.

Your assertion is simply foolish.

End of discussion.

I have iSweep 1500 pads on both my wife's X3MC and they were the first thing I added on my M2 immediately. You can use the current brake sensors, just be careful when you pop them off the OEM pads.

The oem brake dust is very corrosive, and if left on the wheels and/or wiped off with a brush alone will damage the finish.

Spend the $500 for new pads - it's worth it.

The description says it has bristles. Bristles by definition are stiff. I would not use a bristled brush to clean any malleable clear coated surface.

I actually do select restaurants based on on pictures of the food. It's easy to see high quality and good preparation in photos. Wine is a different story. Irrelevant point, anyway.

I made no assertions. I said "it looks abrasive," and it does.

Seems like you're taking critique of a wheel brush personally, so consider me unsubscribed.

I have to agree, I wouldn't and don't use any brush on my wheels. Pretty much any of those brushes will leave swirl marks/fine scratches in the finish of the wheels, just as they would on your car's paint.

I use a separate microfiber wash mitt for the wheels, and they are always the last thing cleaned. The wash mitt and microfiber towels used for the wheels also do not get washed with the mitt & towels I use on the car's paint.

That's exactly what I do. I also used to have wheel cleaners which were shaped like wheel brushes but were basically wash mitt material instead of bristles. Same idea.

Just as you said - If you wouldn't use it on the car's paint, you shouldn't use it on the wheels'.
