I use Adams wheel cleaner, a soft brush for the face, a padded brush for the barrel, and a few smaller brushes for the small areas. As long as its agitated, It cleans it very well but… the smell is really strong.

If this does not work for you, then I recommend gasoline and matches, at least 4!

The best non-acid wheel cleaner for brake dust is, bar none, Koch Chemie MWC. It is expensive and the sprayer is not optimized for the high viscosity of the product so you will use a lot of it, however. I have tried Adam's Wheel Cleaner, Adam's Wheel and Tire Cleaner, Brake Buster, Sonax Full Effect, Turtle Wax Rapid Decon, Armour Detail Supply Wheel, and some others I am forgetting. MWC is better than all of them. The second and third best are the Armour Detail Supply and the Turtle Wax Rapid Decon. Skip Brake Buster and the alkaline cleaners IMO. The iron removing types stink but they are actually safer for coatings and sealants and just work better on brake dust.

I was with you as 1k installed pads just to keep cleaner was a hard pill to swallow. It was the best investment and I only drive the car on the weekend.

The pads are very simple to swap, so paying $1k for pads and install is outrageous. I think I paid $500 for the pads & it took me 20 min to swap them out.

I've used that brush on gloss black wheels and it will slightly mar the finish over time. Nothing crazy, but I personally do not use them any longer and now use the Autofiber Barrel Blade with microfiber sleeve and it works better and is safer. That brush and the similar flag-tipped brushes are fine I think for silver wheels but if you are truly picky I would not use them on black wheels. Again, minor marring of the barrels is not a big deal but I don't use that brush anymore.

Wheel cleaner? Yeah it's normal, the sprayers on almost all wheel cleaners suck and you end up using a shit ton of product. Try pre-spraying the wheel with water, then use about half of the cleaner you would normally use but agitate it with one of those makeup-style detailing brushes. That's the only way to really conserve product. You could try putting the cleaner into a pump sprayer also.

This guy works great, really squeezes between the caliper and the hub as well as its core is compressible. Have used one for 5 years now and still going strong. The outside is replaceable. I will use nothing else other than cleaning the wheel face directly with a wet/soapy microfiber cloth and this thing for the nooks and crannies. This is one of those things in life that you get what you pay for.

In the long term I've found Adams wheel cleaner to be excellent for BMW brake dust in terms of function/price. Get a spray bottle and buy it by the gallon. The brake dust still needs elbow grease to get off, nothing works by itself, and the more expensive cleaners short of wheel acid are just that - more expensive. Ceramic coating is better than nothing, but it too requires elbow grease to get the dust off. My wheel cleaning solution is going to be find wheels that are 5 spoke and easier to clean.

I found using the Vossen/ Adams wheel cleaner and a mf cloth after washing the car wipes right off, no elbow grease required. But wheels are also ceramic coated which helps this alot. The primary complaint with the oem wheels is the spoke design making it more annoying to clean to than anything. Thankfully those are gone in the near future for a much lighter and simpler spoke design.

That brush design you linked seems better than alot. MF based so may be far less abrasive then some of the other brushes out there.

Except the wheels. Two soap applications and two rinses did very little. Ultimately used a brush and a mitt to clean them.

New pads soon. The factory issues are wearing me out.

I just came in from washing her. The wheels only get rinsed and foam Canon they are not touched during. Bout to drive it to heat up brakes to dry em out. Later on after they cool I'll hit them with the vossen / Adam spray and a wipe with mf cloth and call it a day.

It is. Should work great with all the little spaces in these wheels (my car arrives in June, but worked great on the F80 666M Comp rims).

FYI if anyone here isn't familiar with Matt who runs Obsessed Garage he has a ton of videos on his system of detailing cars and has tried what seems to be all products and finds these little gems. I use maybe 1/2 of his recommendations but his videos are worth the watch if you've got some time on your hands and are interested. The microfiber cloths he recommends were also game changers for me - ones that actually dry things, don't lint, are absorbent and washable/reusable for example.
