Is "break-in" period necessary?
I've broke in about 3 cars so far now...because it seems like it cant hurt the car than not breaking in.
However, I've seen several threads from different forums that when they build motors, they break in so that we don't "have" to do this break in period. I couldn't find the definate answer but just wondering what your thoughts on this subject. Plus...I don't know about any BMW cars but my G35c has a break in period of 1200miles which is a lot to me :/ I just don't think that I can wait that long until I push it in such a great car hahaha. |

About the only no-no's are abusing the tires and brakes in the first 200-300kms, driving at a constant speed and rpm, and not allowing the engine to cool down for a period of time after hard driving in the first few hundred kms.
Otherwise, just drive it!

...I am kinda lost...;
I am talking about engine break-in period, which "requires" you to keep the RPM under certain range rather than pushing it to redline when you first get your car. Many people gave me this example, which does make sense but I don't know if samething applies to these cars as well. "It's like you wake up while you are in middle of sleeping and make you spirint a mile when it is 30 degrees outside." Last year when a friend of mine got his 325 sedan, he had about 1600miles of break-in period. I am just wondering if anyone knows about this in detail since it seems like many of you have direct connection with BMW. |

The M models at least in Europe have an official break in period of 1500km's. After that, they have their first M post break-in maintenance inspection, which might involve replacing some parts and oils as a precautionary measure.
The break-in rules are usually not to take it over 5000rpm and not to take the speed over 3/4 of the top speed limiter (250km/h). Best regards, Jussi |

Also, I believe another part of the M break-in service is to synchronize the throttle bodies. Other than this, I believe that there is just inspections. |

You are right. And I would think it's in use in the US M cars as well. Maybe the limit there is 1000 miles?
For "ordinary" non M BMW-cars BMW recommends keeping the revs 3/4 out of max for the first 1000km and again not exceeding 3/4rds of the maximum speed. But there is no break-in service. Also, all new tyres (street tyres, for normal use) should be broken in by driving with them more carefully for about first 1000 kilometers (750 miles) or so. This is especially true of studded winter tyres, as the studs set in finally during those break-in period rounds. Best regards, Jussi |

I see how it is...
Is this an usual thing for most of european cars? We recently got Porsche Cayenne S and the service engine light came on for service. (about 2000~2500miles) I guess I should take it ... o_O;;; |

Hey everybody I have officially finished moving in to my new place in San Dimas, CA (Still Socal)
Anywho, me thinks that breaking in your car is definitely necessary, at least the first 1000-1500miles or so. Thats all, -Pete. :rocks: |
