Initial Servicing -- 1,200 Mile Fluid Change

When I was at the dealership, today, having the "replace battery" light taken care of, the SA told me that I need to schedule my initial servicing (the one that is supposed to occur around 1,200 miles). I was shocked, because I have around 200 miles on my car (even though I have had it for around a month).

Does this seem strange to any of you?

Is there a down-side to having it done now?

Can't have it done at 200 miles or anything close to it. Closest it can be done is likely 1100 miles and even then they may turn you away.

You sure he wanted to do it now or maybe he just wanted you to schedule it (which is still odd since he doesn't know your driving habits)?

It is scheduled for two days from now. When they did the diagnostics for my battery, the car told them that I was due for service. When the SA told me this, I questioned him about it. His response was that if the car tells him that the servicing is due, then he can do it.

Agreed...my CA told me to call him when I was at 1000 miles to schedule it.

I called my sales person to see if this is correct. He checked with others in the service department, and they confirmed that my car is due for the initial servicing.

Meaning, booking a time for you to drop your car off.

Try to forecast when your car will be at 1,200 miles and schedule it for that day, so you drop it off close to it. It's important to use most of the 1,200 miles because a lot of metal shavings will be collected in the oil/filter, and you'll get that replaced with fresh lubricant. Don't go too soon or more metal shavings will be deposited in your new oil.



You can have the 1,200 miles (or 2,000 km) done very early, it's not recommended. It's not true you'll be "turned away" earlier, but you'll be advised well by the service advisor to not do it too early. 1,100 is not too early.

I was able to get it done before 1,000 Km. I chose to schedule it for 2,000 Km.
Why isn't it recommended? I am trying to understand why I shouldn't do it this early. Do I need to wait longer so the engine is better lubricated with the initial fluids.

Nope. Had my M2 done at just over 1000 and M3 CS done at just over 1100. You don't want to go over 2400 miles or so as it will be flagged and cannot be CPO'ed (among other things)

My M2 started reminding me the break in service was due in X number of miles at least several hundred miles short of 1200 miles. And as 1200 miles got closer the X number of miles got less and less.

(And for engines I rebuilt as I was taught I'd run the engine approx. 30 minutes then drain the oil and refill with fresh oil and replace the filter. A 30 minute run time is about 15 miles of driving -- roughly a car averages 30mph over its lifetime.)

Anyhow, back to my M2: Then at 1204 miles I had the break in service done.

And just Thursday had the oil/filter service done at ~5000 miles. Next service will be at 10K miles.

I have a paper that the service advisor handed me saying that my car said that my servicing was due. I will take a picture of it and post it.

As an FYI, I had to postpone my appointment due to a family matter. I haven't rescheduled it, yet, but I am driving my car a lot to put on more miles before the servicing. I really enjoy driving this car.

Post a pic if you want. I checked my photos thinking I had taken a pic of the break in service reminder my M2 displayed but I didn't.

Just so it is clear I'm not saying you should not have the car serviced. If the CBS calls for it that's what you should go by.

I just got my 1200 mile service done at 1173 miles…..well, part of the service. They changed the engine oil but apparently there is a shortage of differential fluid and they couldn’t change that. Wondering if I still need to drive gingerly until they tell me to come back in. They said no, but forgive me if I don’t fully trust those guys.
