Eco Pro day trip test yields 33.2 MPG over 300 miles

My wife and I did a 300 mile day trip today to Dodge Ridge ski resort from Fremont, CA and I decided to see what kind of fuel mileage I could get. 33.2 is better than expected and pretty amazing for a car weighing this much with 382+ horsepower.

Eco Pro mode was used exclusively, with engine stop/start activated. It's a 6,600 foot elevation difference but net zero round trip of course. Temperature was between 32F and 57F. No wind. I'm running the Bridgestone Touranza LS100 A RFT. About half freeway cruising at an average of 75, but up to 90 at times.

Eco pro is interesting in that it coasts under certain conditions. On our trip the display indicated over 25 miles of coasting, and about 11 minutes with the engine off in start/stop mode.

124 miles range left, so maybe 375 comfortably on a tank with 50 miles buffer.

This is awesome to see! I also played with this on my 220 mile trip from Boston to Stowe VT. I havent done the math on the elevation change but I was able to average nearly 84 on the highway with an average of 28.6mpg overall. Absolutely insane considering my 2014 wrx sedan would do the reverse trip and average 26.7 at 73mph.

I averaged 30.2 on the way home but was not playing the eco game.

From past experience in my f44 m135i there's little difference between eco and comfort, apart from the severe lag in eco which if I'm honest I find quite dangerous if you need to pull out of a junction quickly

That must have been the worst drive ever. Sorry, but I seriously cannot do eco mode in any BMW. It is really throttled back, and I'm not sure it buys you a whole lot more than Comfort mode. I did an experiment once to see the benefit of Eco mode over comfort during my morning commute (on an F10), and the benefit was like 2 extra miles. Given how miserable the drive was, I never picked Eco pro again

Not bad at all actually. The initial throttle response is reduced, but not that much and if you get after it to pass someone on a 2 lane road it's hardly noticeable.

I feel like it's a good highway cruising mode. Comfort mode is great for daily drives. Performance is great for spirited driving.

If you put it in Eco Pro it doesn't stick between shut offs so BMW at least agrees with you that you should not use it by default regularly.

This is a far cry from eco mode in a Honda which is unusable and sad.

It was a test to see what is possible, but the biggest reason is that it has a small tank and sometimes you just want to go from point A to point B without refueling.

If a Corolla did 0-60 in 3.6 I still wouldn't be caught dead in one

I can't stand the Eco Pro mode. It makes it feel like you're driving a Kia Forte.

I could regularly get 40+ MPG on the freeway in my F22 230i just by using the cruise control at the speed limit. So I would just do that if I'm trying to stretch my range.
