6MT Shift Knob

My build is going to be week 47 and trying to figure out what everyone has been doing with the shift knob. On my F87 I fitted the dry carbon/Alcantara one and like it a lot, thought about buying the same for the G87. But want to see what else work well.

You and me both!

I have done the stormworks and Black forest industries.

While I prefer the integration/install of the SW, the black forest is a better unit. But that OEM shifter comes with the boot I believe ( plastic welded together) is the cleanest OEM way to go.
I honestly forget they existed.

This the one I have installed now;

Here is the SW ( Heavy though... maybe a bit toooo heavy)

I didn't buy the OEM knob with the boot as I thought it was too much for what it was. I undid the plastic weld and fitted the original boot to the new knob myself. Will probably do the same this time, just not sure how it goes with the wet CF look. Still have time to think thru this, car is only RFT yesterday. First priority is the skid plate.

This member did it on the G80 forum, he indicated he had to redo the boot by shrinking it due to size differential, he also didn't indicate there was a misfit between the boot's collar and the clips/fingers at the bottom of the knob.

https://g80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh...6&postcount=18

I should know when my car gets delivered as I have the original F87 knob in my garage. Not even sure why the factory needed to use plastic weld, the whole thing is pretty much friction-locked when the knob is seated onto the shaft, there's an expansion that pushes the clips (holding the collar) outward.

I wished they offered the dry carbon as an option, prefer that so much more.

Any pics of the shifter installed? I have the storm works in the box, but I like the looks of the Blackforest One!

Does anyone have some info on this knob from Vorsteiner? They announced it a year ago, but I can't find it anywhere.

I'm extremely happy with my shift knob. Thought I was going to hate it, and looked at aftermarket options. 6 months later, I'm glad I didn't switch it out. It's great. Nice weight. Ok throw. Good leather.

Update on the 3.0 CSL shiftknob: as expected, to order the shiftknob: they not only need the VIN from a 3.0 CSL, but here in Germany are even requesting the registration to prove ownership.

Back to the drawing board.

Thanks for the update. I too was really interested in one.

Since the G87 doesn't have dry carbon like my F87, I decided to go with the aluminum knob and save a few bucks since I also don't need another boot. Did the swap in less than 1/2 hour, 90% of the time was trying to separate the original knob from the collar of the boot due to plastic weld, I could have just ripped it like I did on the F87.

Is there an OEM shifter that’s illuminated? I’m nostalgic for the illuminated shift knobs in my E46 touring and my E86 Z4MC.

You could get a used F80 knob (they were illuminated, sidenote: it seems as though BMW skips generations when illuminating their knobs) -- and just install that. I've thought about going that route, but I'd like to switch it up for something like the CSL knob mentioned above.

No, I believe you'd have to tap one of the numerous power sources in the console. There are multiple write ups of E9X guys doing the same if I recall. The cars are different, yet the process is pretty much the same.
