Front brake discs look scored

Hey guys,

I was washing my car today and when I was cleaning the front wheels, I noticed that the front brake discs on both sides looked scored and I don’t really remember them looking like that before. I’ve included some pics which compare the front brake discs with the rear brake discs (first two are front, last is rear. Car was just washed so rear has rusty rotors). Is this normal? Car is at 5600 miles.

It’s simply light oxidation that will disappear next time you drive.

I was referring to the smudging on the front discs, those look normal? I’m not concerned about the rears

Sorry

Mine look similar after washing but ask your dealer to address the concern.
I suspect you’re still warranty covered.
Good luck.

If you exceed the MOT on your pads, they will smear the pad material over the surface of your brake discs. Let us know if it clears up after a few drives. If not, you will have to address it.

Well I learned something new today….i had to look up what an MOT test was. I had no idea the UK required yearly tests like that (Ministry of Transport for anyone else wondering). Dont have that type of test in the US.

Or did you use MOT to mean “Minimum Operating Thickness”?

Probably means Maximum Operating Temperature. As with all acronyms, the interpretation can be ambiguous unless you define it the first time it is used.

Haven't really had any issues 2000 miles later, and I do have the maintenance package that covers brake pads and rotors, so not too concerned. Was just wondering if it looks like anything out of the ordinary. Thanks!

For what it's worth my front rotors look the same with 6k miles. I was surprised.

Your rear pad is delaminated in the middle from using the parking brake. See the rust "smear" in the middle? If it isn't grooved yet, strongly consider replacing that pad. Fronts look rough for sure, but no rust streaks so your pad footprint is at least preserved.

What do you mean by delaminated? Is the only way to avoid this by not using the parking brake? Also, I have Maintenance+ from BMW which covers my brake pads and rotors, do you think I could get them replaced through that? I doubt they'll do it if it isn't a major issue that needs to be corrected though.

First photo is of my rotor - your streak is in the same location of mine.

Here is the pad, some of the material has delaminated from it, so it doesn't contact the rotor in that area and will make a groove....eventually the pad will wear down to that level and contact again, but you will end up with a grooved rotor that will need replacing with your next set of pads. If your pad is delaminated you can replace it now and still save the rotor.

BMW claims that washing the wheels with certain soaps can cause the pads to stick with the parking brake and then some of the pad material pulls off the pad and stays on the rotor.

I'd just keep an eye on it...if the rear streak goes away, you're fine. if it doesn't then have them take a look.

It disappears after washing my car and driving it so I don't think I have the same issue as you.
