According to kern, who is the b58 master, the 0w30 is the way.

I'm probably not deep enough in the oil nerd game to know if 5w30 would be beneficial.

I have that pack I linked, they are identical to the crush washers that come in the kits.

If you don't do oil changed between BMW intervals, I wouldn't recommend 0w30.

Is anyone seriously doing 10k intervals on this car? We all know that's bs created to save the dealers money on leased cars.

Nah man 5K is the most I'll ever go. I do 70% City driving and stop and go. My daily commute is like 15 min each way. So every 5K it is

I change every year but every second oil service is paid out of own pocket instead of bmw service inclusive. I do it purely for 'peace of mind', not because it needs to.

Synthetic oil.

Your oil can be the most elite lubrication force of all time, it doesn't stop metal particles in suspension. No one oil interval is right for everyone, but 10k is wrong for everyone.

The only reason the car makers get away with recommending 10k is that people don't own a given car for very long.

Also, can't find any source that would suggest that 0w30 would have a shorter life than 0w20. So I'm not sure why you would say that it does.

I've never heard of that being the case either. In general the best thing to do is 5K, so every other is covered by Dealer. Extra $125 every 5k miles isn't worth thinking twice about for a 50k car

'BMW recommends long intervals because they don't want to pay' is a recurring theory but it's not logical. However, I do notice a lot of people here live in the US where the climate and/or fuel is less efficient compared to Europe. Qualified oil in Europe lasts 20k km easily. You can test your oil for a few bucks if you are curious. I always do it once or twice with new vehicles.

Also, changing to 0w30 from 5w30 when you live in a hot climate doesn't make sense. 0w30 is a thinner colder oil.

You do not seem to understand the basics of what oil does or what properties you seek from your oil. Might want to refrain from telling others about something you don't even get.

Obvi I'm not an oil nerd either but: Yes, technically you can go 10K miles on most modern vehicles. You *can*, and that's also what manufacturers advertise because it's the absolute bare minimum you could do to take care of your engine/the bare minimum to maintain your warranty lol. It means customers that are lazy are appeased with less maintenance and dealers in turn save billions of dollars over the long term by cutting oil changes in half for their entire fleet.

However...There is literally zero reason to have a luxury car and sweat over an extra couple hundred dollars a year to do the best thing for the engine, not the bare minimum, but the best thing.

So yes you can spend time and money testing the oil or you could listen to every non-dealer mechanic out there and just change it every 5K at minimum because it's the better thing to do.

Except there is little evidence to support that.
