IND | Fall-Line Motorsports G87 M2 Oil Cooler Guard
Featured on BIMMERPOST.com MADE IN THE USA. The G8x M2, M3, and M4 cars are incredibly well sorted from a cooling standpoint. Even in a road course environment with extremely high ambient temperatures, the S58 engine tends to operate beautifully, with consistent oil and water temperatures. BMW M invested a great deal of time, money, and effort into designing a cooling system that worked in nearly every condition that the M2 and M3 / M4 would be tested in. Although excellent ducting, good core design, strong fans, and other factors all play in to how well a cooling system works, there is one ultimate factor which cannot be circumvented- you must have enough heat exchanger surface area, and you must have enough heat exchangers. When examining the front of a G8X, then, we see the hard work of the M engineers in packaging the various cooling components of the car. Everything had to be accounted for, and given ample space, surface area, and ducting. Unfortunately, this leaves the S58 engine’s oil cooler precariously exposed with no protection. A direct impact to the oil cooler can have catastrophic effects, draining the S58 of all of its oil in seconds, a fact that more than a handful previous generation M3 and M4 owners have had to learn in a painfully direct way. Having seen that this was a critical need for both the M2 and M3 / M4 cars, IND worked with Fall Line Motorsports to develop a robust oil cooler guard, specifically designed to shield the S58’s oil cooler from large road debris and prevent disaster. The new Fall Line Motorsports oil cooler guards is constructed from thick stainless steel, and fastens directly to existing frame members on the G80, G82, and G87 cars, spreading any impact across strong structural components. Special care was taken to ensure that the opening in the oil cooler guard matched the shape and size of the existing BMW oil cooler air outlet, ensuring that proper air flow is maintained. Does this look like it will not protect from the smaller rocks or debris that could puncture the cooler? Big rocks or debris yes, and still good airflow. Just my initial observations.

On the flip side, adding more decreases cooling capacity. Probably the best compromise they got. |

Bah, I thought about it for my F80. I think the big argument was when someone drove over a ladder or some other big object dropped on the highway, and perhaps something like this could have prevented the catastrophic oil drain which occurred (dead engine in less than 30sec).
But really, how likely is that to happen? Using a personal anecdote, in my 2015 M3, in the most embarrassing driving moments of my life, I ran over a sharp granite curb and damaged the oil cooler. In this scenario, with basically the weight of the car on it, any cooler protection would have folded like paper. Perhaps it would protect against chunks of ice in the winter. IMO this type of cooler guard, for all the excellence of its engineering and factory-like fit, is only effective in a few interesting scenarios, but you have to ask yourself how likely you are to catch one of them. On the flip side, the last thing this car needs is more weight up front. Just my opinion of course.

However, most people will lower this car for the track use or performance street driving. The biggest downside to this modification, is limited ground clearance. Speed bumps, pot holes, raised manhole covers, etc. are very common where I live and I have seen that they can cause some serious damage to the underside of a car. I'd use a 1/4" full aluminum skid plate that conceals as much as possible of the lower engine compartment and is preferably formed so that no edges will get caught on objects when traveling forward, backwards or sideways while it has small round openings/holes for cooling. A shop can do a custom piece easily for that purpose. Of course, it won't be as convenient as this one as it is very easy to install in comparison but definitely worth for the piece of mind IMHO.

Oil cooler needs air flow...a skid plate over it will cause equal to if not more harm than good. |

Yep. You can have as many holes as possible so that you have air for cooling and still protection.I had that on multiple cars with no issues with oil temp.

Round holes will work best when the airflow is perpendicular to the surface, or at relatively small angles. If you want to find out how quickly your M2 will overheat, block the oil cooler with the contraption you are suggesting and wait for summer.

Discussed at length in the M5 forum. A couple have taken it to a local shop and had stainless mesh welded on. There are also other brands that provide a mesh vs this. Won’t blow up INDs thread but there are other options for this exact reason. I’m running black stainless mesh myself.
Negative as the air flow is from top to bottom (threw the bumper not below it). Mesh will not restrict this in any significant way as the air is already being slowed down from the radiator itself. The horizontal flow below the cooler creates a vacuum and helps pull the air through.
