Join the BMW Car Club of America which will also get you membership in the BMWCCA Tarheel Chapter within your region. They are a very active group who put on several track events every year which include different levels of activity. https://www.tarheelbmwcca.org/calendar.html

Check your insurance before taking your vehicle on the track; most likely damage that occurs there is excluded. Ask the club folks if they think track insurance makes senses at your skill level and such. And, check your warranty as it also may have exclusions for track use. If all that seems too much, there are BMW events where you drive their cars, and some other organizations that do similar things (pay to play). But start with the BMW CCA to learn enough to make an appropriate decision for your situation. |

Be sure to ask the organization if they allow SUVs on track. I know some (many?) don't, even for top-dog performance SUVs.

Also the XM is electric right? Some tracks are very against having electric vehicles on the track as they really cant support putting the fire out.

Good callout, though. Charging infrastructure is also very lacking in most tracks, so EVs are pretty much a no-go even if the organization allows them. |

I've seen some Subaru Forrester's and Porsche Macan/Cayanne's.

I signed up for a driver training day at Lime Rock, and had a lot of fun. It was not on the big track, but on a fairly short figure 8 track, and some time on the skid pad.
On the short track we locked the transmission in 2nd gear, and then ran half of the the track with an instructor to show us the cones where they marked it for braking into a curve, accelerating out of the turn, etc. We ran a couple more times on our own, and then with the instructor analyzing our technique. Then they opened up the full figure 8 and we made several more runs. From there we rotated to the skid pad, where we used a Mazda Miata to learn how to control skids on the wet track. There were all kinds of vehicles in the class, including SUVs, a vintage Corvette, and an old Lotus. |
