Rear seat space on G87 M2 Vs Base Carerra 992

I’m cross shopping between the base Carerra 992 & G87 M2. Have a 6 year old and 10 year old, wanting to keep the car for at least 6 years. Is there a comparable difference in rear seat space between these two vehicles??

Per my experience the 911 rear seat is pretty much unusable by anyone that you truly care about. It would be best for you to visit your local Porsche dealership as well as the BMW dealership as the rear seat of a G42 will be nearly identical to the one in the G87.

I daily drive my G42 M240i every day with my family of 2 kids (4 and 11). They fit absolutely without any problem in the back and like it very much.
So the G87 shouldn’t be any problem…

Don’t know about the porsche

G42/87 are slightly smaller in the rear than the F22/87. IIRC the G42/87 has less headroom, shoulder room and legroom than the previous generation. It however has more room up front than the last generation and has a larger trunk.

Thanks for the responses so far. Looks like the 992 is looking like a bad option at this point, so therefore if I may have to go with the M2.

I’m guessing I could make do with the M2 until my kids are into their late teens which is probably never going to happen with the 992.

I’m debating these as welll. 992 T with back seats added in or M2. M2 is just so so much cheaper and probably just as fast if not more fast. Best of both worlds.

My build for a 992 T was over $130k and I was able to acquire an allocation. I chose to pass. I would much rather order a manual C2S, but for my build it is an additional $25k. The G87 is a vastly better purchase at this time.

Yes the G87 does seem to be a much better value for money proposition but the looks and handling of the 992 are just on another level.

I've been to see the 992 and my kids just about fit in the back at the moment without too much room for growth whereas when sitting in the back of a 2 series coupe, there does seem to be far more room for growth into their teens.

Agreed, but unfortunately the 992 is a rather large vehicle. Many jokingly call it the two door Panamera.

Yeah, but I don’t mind the size increase at all, it’s just shame that it hadn’t got as much room in the back as a panamera though!

Since the introduction of 991 the 911 became more of a Grand Tourer than a sports car. The exception would be the T and GT models, but that is a totally different buyer. The reality is a 992 vs a G87 is an unfair comparison.

BTW, a base 992 is $106k. That is a $44k premium over a base G87. That is rather significant and I do not foresee them being cross shopped that often.

The price, yes, is not equivalent but they are both 4 seater, manual transmission (992 T model), enthusiast sports cars with likely similar performance (M2 is prob faster in straight line, Porsche better handling). They are the last manual ICE 4 seater coupes with thrilling performance so I do think they may be cross shopped. I could afford either and while I prefer the look of the Porsche and analog controls/interior, the BMW wins based on likely having more brutal performance which I’m looking for (fun factor vs surgical performance).

The 992 T has the rear seat delete as standard so one must add it at no cost. The base T is $116k and at a $54k premium over the base G87 I do not believe we are going to have a whole lot of individuals walking in our door that were originally planning to order/purchase a 992 T.

My personal opinion and having owned a 911 as well as having been a member of the PCA for many decades, I do not think the 911 has really ever been considered a four seater. Realistically the rear seat is only usable by elementary school children whereas a G42/G87 can seat two adults at just under 6 ft.

The 992 is made for children at best. You can sit an average height adult sitting diagonally across the back seats and with their head bent, but its extremely uncomfortable.

My 6'3" brother can squeeze into the back of my G42 but he has no chance in my 992.

Leg and head room is the main difference.

G42/G87 can fit an adult, the 992 can fit a child.

Yup… that’s why I’m cross shopping the two.. I have a 1yr old and a 3yr old. Either car’s back seat works just fine for them for the next 10yrs.

Agreed. I do not believe the 992 rear seating is child seat friendly? Our child is a college student so I am fortunate that I do not have to worry about it. I did have a few E46 coupes when said child was in a car seat. What a pain!

Note, I did not watch and this is also for a 991.

Yea I was thinking we’d have to go front facing seat behind me for my daughter. And I probably would leave the 1yr old home with his mom during occasional cruises and car meets. If we went as a family the infant carrier would be behind the passenger seat and my wife is shorter so she would be moved forward.

Anyways, likely still going with an M2, but I do debate this every few days.

8min mark in this video goes into more detail… I didn’t realize you can do a rear facing infant carrier in front passenger seat.

You might get lucky with being able to fit a rear facing behind the passenger seat in the g87 depending on which car seat it is, but I'd wager that it would be very unlikely in the Carrera. I'd rather the whole fam be able to come along for a ride.

Price and size are why I'm considering the M2 and the Integra Type S instead of the 992, which is also crazy expensive at the moment.

M2 passenger volume - 90 cu. ft.
992 passenger volume - 72 cu. ft.

M2 cargo volume - 13.8 cu. ft.
992 cargo volume - 5 cu. ft.

It’s all about packaging. The exterior dimensions of the 2 series and 911(992) are shockingly similar. My 2009 997.2 is a totally different story. It is visibly smaller than newer 911’s. The back seats in any 911 are there for use in a pinch. Not practical at all. People who keep complaing about the back seats in the 2 are just forcing BMW to make the next gen bigger, which is the last thing we want.

Backseat room is key for those of us that have kids.
I will always suggest 4doors is best, but in this comparison.
M2 >>>> 911….I owned an OG M2 and a 991.2 Carrera T for reference.
