How is the auto start/stop?
Hey all,
Considering buying a 230i and had a question. How smooth is the auto start/stop on the 2 series? I saw in the linked video around 4:50 mark that they said they didn't like it because it was rough and intrusive and I believe I saw another video where they basically said the same thing due to it not having the 48V battery that comes with the mild hybrid system. With my current driving patterns I am not getting stuck in traffic jam's or highway construction where I am sitting for longs periods of time, so if it is indeed rough or doesn't engage quickly I would see about setting it to off by default using BimmerCode. |

Maybe you can get a test drive of a 230 and experience the auto stop/start for yourself?
I'm not a fan of engine auto stop/start and one of the must haves with any car I buy with this feature is the ability to disable it. With my 230xi (and the 230i I owned before it) I disable auto stop/start via Sport mode. I press the engine start button then a half a moment later press the Sport button. Besides auto stop/start being disabled the only other thing different between Sport and normal mode is the coasting feature (?) is disabled. There is a button to disable auto stop/start but I use Sport mode as it allows me to call up on the Live Display engine telemetry, like engine oil temperature. With my M2 the Genius at the dealer disabled the auto stop/start feature. For the 230xi I haven't had any need to look into this but it might be possible with the BMW app and at the car to code the auto stop/start feature off without having to rely upon doing this by selecting sport mode or even by pressing the auto stop/start button. |

Yeah, I will have to do a test drive and see, but the dealer is 30 minutes away so wanted to get some opinions here. I'm that guy that gets in the far right lane cause there is nobody in it, but need to be in the left lane at the next light so if it was slow to switch over I would definitely try to disable it by default.

I don't find the auto start/stop too intrusive, but I always turn it off. Although it's quite smooth, there is a momentary delay between letting off the brake, then engine starting, and then moving. I prefer to have the engine idling ready to go, because every stop light is the opportunity for a drag race
Joking, but I don't like that little delay when letting off the brake. It's not jarring, but I notice it. |

If stopped in traffic, I'm not sitting on the brake so when the car in front moves, it kicks in before I even get my foot to the throttle. If I'm front of the line at a light, still find it smooth and easy but again I'm not sitting on the brake.

i'm typically in my individual sport mode in the 240i but what i do remember is that it cuts out a little too early, kind of an abrupt stop iirc.

There is a way of causing the engine to shut off if auto stop/start is active but the engine didn't shut off on its own. If the engine was not switched off automatically when the vehicle came to a stop, it can be switched off manually: ▷ Rapidly press the brake pedal from the current position. ▷ Engage selector lever in position P. If all the operating requirements have been met, the engine is stopped. |

BTW intrigued as to why you always refer to your vehicle as a 230xi when it’s a 230ix |

But then I started seeing 230xi on other documents and I took up the theme. I'll go back to using 230ix. |

I mostly don’t have any issues with the system. For normal driving I’m in comfort or eco pro (please don’t murder me) compared to my old F82 drastic improvement.
Not sure if it’s a feature of one of the options but also automatically starts the engine back up when the car in front moves without even coming off the brake, really nice feature. It can be a little quick sometimes, cut before ive fully stop as I like to slowly coast up to the back of people in traffic. This occasionally means it starts right back up again as I wasn’t fully on the brake |

This is mainly why I don’t like the feature. Engine starting and stop within a few seconds isn’t helping anything. Most notably when trying to park.
