Lots of signs point to a fast rebound for travel in 2021. That's because people like us will be making up for missed travel

canceled Tokyo olympics
canceled bmw M school Palm Springs
canceled pompano beach FL Christmas
also canceled numerous NYC trips just to eat at all my favorite restaurants (yes I drive 3.5 hours just for pastrami @ Katz and an egg cream)

Already looking to setup Italy, Japan and California for next year, spread out every couple months

I'm planning now but if things are still F'ed up near departure I could cancel again

I really hope things improve. We missed a great trip to England this year because of this mess and Wifey has a scheduled conference in San Antonio this coming July that I really want to go to because I have old army buddies there that I'd love to spend time with. Plus the conference hotel is smack on the Riverwalk. But if we still need to wear masks and social distance, there will be no trip. I plan on retiring in May, so I'm really looking forward to some traveling. Fingers crossed for an effective vaccine.

We postponed a Europe trip this year. Our plans will depend on what the airlines think they can get from passengers in terms of ticket prices next year. We have a few United States trips on the list, if Europe doesn't pan out in 2021. And a Canada trip, if they ever let Americans into the country again.

Good point. If there is a vaccine, travel will be a big thing. People have been banking (I assume) lots of vacation time and money. Will demand drive travel costs sky high?

I miss crowds, I miss seeing all the action going on when we visit places

My wife jokes she needs a recording of rowdiness outside, car alarms going off and sirens to get a comfortable sleep when we travel

Couple years ago we were in Spain during what was supposedly the low season. It was 40 degrees and rainy but the streets were packed and the tapas bars FULL, every day and every night. (most memorable vacation, we loved every moment)

I can't imagine my bucket list trip to Tokyo and Olympics (combined) needing a mask to avoid contact with people, not going if we have the same restrictions

Thanksgiving not with a packed house is depressing, slim table, no family arguments just a quiet meal is a nightmare to me

Wifey's circle includes a conference every year that alternates between cool places in the US and UK. This year was supposed to be UK again. This was the first time in 10 years or so that we haven't had our bi-annual trip to the UK. Ok, first world problem, I know. Still, this was one more downside to 2020.

In my worst nightmares I never dreamed we wouldn't be allowed to enter a country because we're from the U.S. Seriously depressing.

I can see the airlines tempted to price gouge. Do you see that potential M_Six ?

Too many variables to really know when travel and vacation rebound. Hard to imagine a vaccine widely distributed and administered before the second half of ‘21 at the earliest. I expect a lot of turmoil in (at least) the first half of ‘21.

In US - yes, starting January it will be all "#recovery" and "#restore". But even now, the issue is primarily other countries being on lock down: you simply cannot enter them, or at least as freely as before. Who knows what local governments will come up with next.

I don't know about gouging, but certainly supply and demand will come into play. Once the airlines are able to fill all the seats again, I can see them trying to recoup lost income by ramping up prices until they hit the upper tolerance level of travelers.

I think they definitely will charge premiums when they think they can and will also be careful about adding routes that were dropped. The big question for the airlines is when and how much business travel will return because bargain hunting consumers have a limited tolerance for price increases.

I really miss traveling being able to experience other cultures & food.

We just got back from a short trip to Asheville and have a house rented in Breckenridge for the week between Christmas & New Years. It's been very weird not being able to travel internationally. We have a use it or lose it vacation policy so I'm going to try and get a few more weekend trips in before the end of the year.

Airlines have been ridiculous with their prices for years. One day your flight drops $100, the next day it goes up $75 with 1 seat left and 3 days later is drops again and they have 15 seats available. I will never understand it.

This time last year we were in Japan. It's such a great country to visit. I've been to Tokyo twice. It's a cool city to see but I really prefer Kyoto & the smaller areas. We went to Mt Fuji this time and the weather was gorgeous so we had amazing views.

@RickFLM4

MILESTONE: is it the infection curve being well and truly flattened, or does it mean the arrival and widespread distribution of a vaccine?

🔮
The first 1/2 of post-coronavirus travel (mid-late 21, will see 'tiptoe travellers' venturing out.

I think it will start to ramp up when the appearance of “under control” but a full rebound seems dependent on a vaccine IMO. So agree in tiptoe out sometime in ‘21. There are also variables about the economy that will factor in.

I am happy we bought a vacation condo in Asheville, NC last year (where I am typing this right now). It gives us a place to get away. And there has been an upturn in an already hot market. Buyers from all over are snapping up condos and homes here to get away from cities. Condos in our building (new construction completed in ‘19) are going for about 20-25% more than cost just last year.

I am looking forward to being able to travel freely again. Was on track to visit 5 new countries this year and all of that was curtailed. Hopefully in 2021 we can get back some normalcy.

I the opposite will occur initially, which will impact the economy and travel in the first half of 2021.

I'd forget next year and focus on 2022. That's the reality of the situation 'cos people have no fucking discipline and we are where we are now.

I expect the economy is gonna take a large hit. Stock market is going to plummet in anticipation of biden/harris economy and the rise in taxes that come with it. They will likely shut down the country again if there isnt suddenly a cure now that the election is over. Which there is a great possibility that it’s gonna suddenly appear.
Other countries are gonna remain on lockdown for atleast another year.

My plan was to travel Europe in 2020 summer, but obviously that didn't happen. 2021 I'm planning on visiting every mainland state because flights are ridiculously cheap - I can fly to los angeles and back for less than $100. Round trips are still a bit more expensive, but it's not impossible to find $50-60 flights one way.

2022 summer i want to hit Europe/Asia, which sucks, but I've always wanted to visit all the states at some point too.

I think it's the opposite - corporations I feel like have been waiting for the administration to change to reduce/remove tariffs and other economic sanctions. This'll lower their bottom line greatly so their profits will increase etc, I see the market in an upward trend to be honest.
