Get an alignment!

I was past the mileage by the time I knew you could get it at no extra cost from BMW. Especially me having the M Performance HAS kit installed at port with no alignment spec sheet.

The G87 is my first BMW, so I didn't know what to expect regarding ride quality. Honestly, it just never felt right. I even made a post about it being hard to drive the car straight, as it was always darting across lanes. I deleted the post because apparently, it was just me. I chalked it up to me always being tired from work or me not being used to a sports car.

The car also felt unsettling around turns, especially with a bump in the turn. I experienced bump steer and bouncing of the car. It just never felt "great."

And to his credit, M Power Rob did mention to me about getting an alignment if the car wasn't going straight. But to me, it did, so I never looked into it. Little did I know there's so much more to an alignment than thinking it tracks straight.

Well, today I finally got a 4-wheel alignment, and wow, what a difference it has made! The smoothness, steering feel, and stability have improved dramatically. The turn-in is now sharp and direct, and the Sport plus suspension, which previously felt harsh, now feels suitably rigid.

Driving it now, I realize that I was constantly fighting the car before. Now, I feel much more connected to it and can sense what it's doing. Immediately after the alignment, I took it into the national forest and had a blast tearing it up.

Nice! So they didn’t charge you? I think standard procedure for MPHAS port install is for the port to also align but maybe they didn’t in your case.

I was charged since I'm way past the 2000 mile mark I think it is. But I did use a 25% off service coupon 😎
And I read a thread before I received my car stating you're supposed to have an alignment sheet but some didn't, including myself it turns out. I had papers in the glovebox regarding suspension but not alignment.

Thanks for this info. I optioned the MP HAS kit as a port install. Will look for the alignment sheet for sure when I take delivery.

I never received an alignment sheet after the MP HAS port install either.

I went to another bmw dealer instead of where I purchased my car since it's 15 min away rather than 1 hour out of convenience. Maybe you can talk to your CA regarding getting it done at no extra cost. Even paying for it, from 230$ to 172$ after coupon, it was definitely worth it in my case.

I see from some google searches that BMW does cover alignment and wheel balancing within 2000 miles for all cars.

When I get my 2025 M2 with MPHAS I was planning to drop it from the port installed 10mm drop to the fully 20mm drop. So I guess if I do that within first 2k miles I can take it back to bmw and ask them to align it.

*If you can get the dealer to do it.
I took mine in at 1,800 mi & the Service Advisors argued with me it wasn't covered. Then I pulled up the M2 warranty booklet & showed them, they still argued & said they'd never heard of alignment being covered. Finally, they said if I wanted it covered, they would have to have a tech diagnose the alignment issue, submit it for warranty approval, and wait for BMW to approve it. Said they would need my car for at least 4 days & no loaner was available. BUT if I wanted to pay $225, they could do the alignment that day. BMW of South Austin btw.

Ugh yea shitty. I can def see them saying a tech would need to verify the issue first.

In that situation you should speak to a manager and if they aren't helpful tell them you'll be reporting it to BMW NA and that you will go to a different dealership for all your future service needs. That usually is enough for them to stop F'n around and take care of you.

That sucks. I got my X5 there a few years ago but they seem to have gone down hill lately. When I was trying to order my M2 with them I couldn't even reach a human or get a call/email back.

Seems like a inconsistency for folks. For me I got the alignment sheet with the signature of the tech who installed the MP HAS as well, along side with that “wrench tool” for adjusting heights in my glove box.

Curious, how easy is it to adjust using that tool? Do you just jack it up and and make some turns using that tool and done?

It wasn't my usual dealership, I have 2 residences for a big chunk of the year. If I would've driven to my usual dealership (BMW Dallas), I would've been over the 2k mi mark anyway. Plus I couldn't get to Dallas for a while at that point. It is what it is, I now know what dealership to not use in Austin.

TBH I’ve not used that tool yet (had car for about 3 Mo now and it’s set to the middle by port and I feel It’s pretty good for my driving style). I’ve seen some people’s video though, basically you just align the teeth on the collar and turn and count your clicks of rotation on each corner, you most likely will need to re-align after that.

Very expensive glorified spring kit and bmw doesn’t even align it. Mine was also a mess. Had it aligned at my Indy. Big difference after a proper alignment. Surprised so many people are still having these issues. Basically paying the price for a full coilover kit from Bmw. It’s a rip off if you think about it. Not a good OTB experience bmw.

Agreed. Get an alignment. My car feels so much better now.

The tech said the the bolt in the right rear was "loose."

Night and day difference.

Was driving for a bit at highway speeds - still during break in period and I can only describe the car as feeling a little ‘jittery’. Going to push for an alignment at the 1200 mile break-in service, thanks for the tip!

I too had the MPerf spring kit installed at port and my alignment was terrible. Had to get it done to bring it back in spec and it does indeed transform the car.
