E90 318d M Sport Business Edition Owner
bought the car in February. A massive change from a Focus ST. But loving the quality of the drive and looks I get. (Alpine white...lush)
Quick one. The car is a 318d M Sport Auto. 26,000 miles and full BMW Service history. Average MPG is 42.8. My commute to work is 24 miles of motorway and the return leg, night shift no traffic and a steady 65 on cruise control. When am on the motorway the instant MPG needle sits 90% just under the 50mpg. But short town, city pulls this then down. Working it out manually am getting around 43 MPG. To me the MPG seemed very low. Took her to BMW who checked everything and told me this was normal MPG as this was not an efficient Dynamics model. So is missing a lot of components which make the car easier to drive, lighter etc.... Just want to make sure am right, and not being sold a bum steer by BMW. Appreciate anyone's time in this manner. |

Check the temperature of coolant in the hidden menu.
If your car is running on lower temperature, it can effect the mpg.

It seems very low to me. The dealer lent me a loan 318d and the average MPG on that was low sixties. I was very impressed!
Try this for the hidden menu: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=548601 Good luck

My 08 320d averages 34mpg on te clock but its hit a motorway twice in a month, when i done a run to peppa pig world last year from essex on my idrive for the journey it averaged 58mpg and i was doing a steady 70-80mph the whole way.
I thought all 318/320d's after 09 were efficient dynamics?

I have a 2007 320d that's been remapped. Commuting I was getting 36mpg. Then did manchester to London and managed 50mpg doing mostly 90+ mph very impressed.
I thought ED were 2008 onwards |

Managed to check menu 7 on the way home tonight.
KTMP-MOM sat around 87-89 mark. I assume this is fine, as when its hot its health. ATMP-MOM sat at 15 degrees. I assume this is the outside temperature. Car went into BMW to have a check done on it 29-5-14. Below is the report I was given. As mine WAS NOT an efficient Dynamic car:
Efficent dynamic cars come with various weight saving components. That come with low resistance oil and aluminium suspension. **PLUS CAR IS AN AUTOMATIC** and transmissions use more fuel. As I said car averages 42.8mpg on the combined cycle. Is there anyway I can check from a chassis number or any detail to say mine is or is not an ED model? I thank you all for your help |

Check front grille
If its blanked off when stationary it has ED. If you can see straight through the slats to the radiator its not an ED Mpg is still on the low side. Try some injector cleaner and an italian tune up. Id also be looking at a service |

My 320d is an 07 without efficient dynamics and I still achieve 48mpg and I don't exactly hang around. I'd be tempted to take it to an independent specialist.

A 2010 car is an LCI and as far as I'm aware all these have ED to some extent, but the specific model named 'Efficient Dynamic' has more, including skinny wheels and low rolling resistance tyres etc, I suspect that this is what BMW are referring to.
Checking the spec of my 2010 320d M Sport it includes: S1CCA...Auto start/stop function S1CDA...Brake Energy Regeneration ....... which would indicate Efficient Dynamics, but not the but not the full compliment of fuel saving bits. My 320d certainly doesn't have Electric Steering pump or a Radiator Blinds, but observing the voltage on & off load suggests that it does have intelligent alternator control. MPG wise, I have a manual box and I tend to average 45 - 49 in normal motoring, a mixture of urban & motorway - but lots of short journeys and cold starts can see this drop to 40 or less, whilst mainly motorways can see it rise to 55+. At a steady 65 on Cruise Control I'd expect to see 60mpg + indicated and I'd be very unimpressed if it was reading below 50mpg Checking the 2011 BMW Brochure they list consumption as: 318d Manual / Auto: Urban: 52.3 / 41.5 .... Extra Urban 70.6 / 64.2 .... Combined 62.8 /53.3 320d Manual / Auto: Urban: 47.9 / 41.5 .... Extra Urban 70.6 / 64.2 .... Combined 60.1 /53.3 320d Efficient Dynamics: Urban: 56.5 .... Extra Urban 78.5 .... Combined 68.8 |

43 mpg average isn't that bad if you are driving in town a bit.
I've owned a few diesels in my time and mid 40s even when I was doing a lot of motorway miles was my average. I've had a few 120/320ds as courtesy cars before. 60mpg could be achieved if I really nursed it. I'm sure my average was in the 40s too. Diesels come into their own on long motorway runs. They also take quite a while to warm up before hitting the big figures. All cars fall significantly short of the figures given in test conditions. |
