Explain the plastic thing between the backseat and trunk

I'm an e93 noob and am wondering what the purpose of this thing that separates the backseat and trunk:

Maybe that is what is causing my rattle problems. I thought it was coming from the middle roof section. I need to have someone drive me around so I can sit in back and pinpoint it. It is driving me nuts.

Yup, a ski bag so your skis don't mess up your car when pushed through to the back seats. Kinda cool, but I'll never use mine.
