HELP!!! Water pump and thermostat
I've got a 2008 e92 335xi. This car has been absolute nightmare since it got to 83000 miles. Everything has gone wrong from turbos being replaced in addition to a multitude of parts I can't explain. Every repair has been done at the dealer. Yesterday the thermostat warning indicator popped up in yellow then red seconds later. The car went into limp mode then basically wouldn't move more than 2 mph. A mechanic told me I need to replace the water pump and thermostat. Is their anyone here that has had to do this before? How much am I looking at cost? Is this something that is a difficult undertaking that I shouldn't attempt to repair myself.
Help please. p.s. There wasn't much coolant leaking. Frustrated BMW Lover

water pump and thermostat failure on these cars is common at higher mileage. Actually it has been common in pretty much all 3 series.
ESC has this kits with everything you need to do both: http://www.ecstuning.com/BMW-E90-335...ump/ES2763064/ Not sure how much labor would be if you take it somewhere to get done. Dealer would probably charge a lot.

If you are a somewhat experienced DIYer you can do this job. However, as I understand it, the XI models require a bit more work to complete this task. You might want to look at some other threads regarding that before you decide if you want to try it yourself or just let a shop do it.
Good luck! |

Your water pump went which is nothing out of the ordinary. I did this on my old xi last summer and it was hell. Xi's are a little more tough to do since there is a steel beam right in the way of where you need to be and it takes a lot of turning and twisting to get the thing out. I got my water pump from parts geek(you can use ecs, rock auto, etc) and the thermostat kit and replacement water pump bolts from ecs. If you are mechanically inclined i'd say get a case of your favorite beer and have fun. If you feel like the job is too in depth just have your dealer or an indy replace it. If you do it on your own have some long socket extensions, swivel socket adapters, shallow well sockets, and shallow well torx sockets, makes the job a lot easier.

I would tend to agree, but OP has an XI model and that is a lot more work so it might at least be worth checking out what a shop would charge to do it. |
