2009 335i…AC going damn!!
I have had my car since Jan…45k on it when purchased. Now at 53k the AC is going. 2 weeks ago I was smelling a musty smell from the vents and over the last month I could tell it wasn't cooling like it should. Now I live in FL and there has been record heat but its in the high 80s today and it was not cooling very well…not blowing warm but it's down a few lbs.
From past experience, I can say that it's a G to fix. This pretty much sucks. I do have another car to drive (e46 M3) but that one is on the sales block so time to get it in the shop. |

You can also go to Walmart and spend $25 for a recharge kit if you simply have a slow leak.

Sorry to hear about your AC man. You can probably recharge it.
If you have a few moments, I created a thread with unique polls for members to vote on things that broke on their cars. Please fill out the option for the "AC Broke Poll" and any others so the forum members can benefit from statistics on part durability. Much appreciated! http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1010429

I thought mine was toast a few months ago. Went to one shop and they wanted way too much to even look at it. I didn't like the way things were going... $x to look at it...if it is this....$xx more....and then this might need to be done and that is $xxx etc. Fuck that.
Bought Harbour Freight AC manifold and studied some DIY's and info....ended up getting mine to blow ice cold for total investment of <$100. Even did the same for my brother's M5. Fwiw I had that musty, mildew smell as well. All good now and a couple thousand miles since fix. |

Don't do this... Please. Those recharge kits are bad news, they have one gauge on them and only measure the amount put in not the total amount of refrigerant, you need a professional two gauge system for that as I understand it since modern cars are very sensitive to the amount of refrigerant in the system. Basically summarized a recent segment on motorweek I saw lol.

You probably just need a "top off". Just did this for my 1999 Honda Civic. Cost 50 Euros. Go to a good BMW Indy shop--no need to go to dealer for this...

Took the car in this am to my local Indy. The evaporator is toast. It only had 1/2 pound of refrigerant left. It's a full dash-out job. I have been reading that this is common for the car…another other models as well: x3, x5 etc… $1650 is roughly the cost which isn't awful as it's 14 hrs. labor.
I asked the owner what the "best" case scenario was…he said there was none…haha. I guess you gotta laugh at that! |
