Kids kill batteries

I let my boy sit in the car while he waited for me for over two hours. During that time he ran the AC, Headlights, radio and windshield wipers (the fu$&ing windshield wipers!) while the engine was not running. The obvious occurred and he killed the battery. Luckily my wife was nearby and I had jumpers in my car and I was able to get home. The 15 minute drive seemed to have done the trick because the next day it started.

I continued to drive about 50 miles the next day, and thought its gotta be charged now. Later that same night it didn't crank, but the lights came on. I had my wife jump my car again and it started so it's definitely a soon to be dead battery.

My questions are:

if my battery was on its way out wouldn't I get a battery symbol on my dash or check control?

Can I just have my battery recharged to 100% at auto zone? ( I read here that the our cars do not fully recharge the battery if it has gone below a certain %level of charge)

If I get a new battery can I use something other than a BT tool to program and register it? Like BMWhat app?

Its true that a battery under a certain level of charge needs a recycle charging, but most intelligent chargers you can buy in the shop will handle that. You could just buy a good batterycharger from autozone and leave it on overnight. Read the instructions or talk to guys at the store about what happened and thar you want a model that will recondition the battery. IŽd get a bigger 6amp or so model and hook it up in the enginebay overnight. Dont go for the smaller models unless you plan on letting it do its thing for atleast 48 hours. Those are generally fit only for motorcycle, ATV and similar batteries.

The battery is your stock one I assume? 6 years isnt long or short when it comes to batteries.. It shuld be fine unless its taken real damage. The way its behaving sounds odd. Your obviosly getting a charge, sinve you dont have warninglights and the 15 minute drive filled it up enough to get it to start the next day.

For my money, Id get a cherger, hook it up overnight. If its still fussing after that, just get a new battery. Its not cheap, but peace of mind is sometimes worth it.

Effing kids these days, am I right? So desensitized by videos and electronics. You'd think they could find something better to do than sit in a car for two hours touching things.

Kids aren't these ultra fragile things that will evaporate if you don't stare at them constantly.

Isn't it actually illegal to leave your kids in a car for extended periods of times? Apparently a number of them die of dehydration every year from it.

Anyway, kids get bored quickly. What did you expect. You're lucky they didn't remove the parking brake and rolled the car in neutral around town.

As for your questions, if your battery was already close to end of service, being fully discharged is a sure way to kill it for good. You can try to recharge and see what happens, if it fails again during the winter, just change it asap, it's going to spiral for worse. The BMWhat app can do battery registration for $. Or you can get the battery registerd by your local indep german shop.

I'm surprised the wife didn't beat you with the jumper cables for leaving the kid inside the car for 2 hrs.

Listen he cracked the window, left a water bowl, and a wee wee pad for the kid in the back seat. So I am sure he was safe.

On the real side, we do not know how old the kid is. Could be 15 that just did not want to go into the mall or something. I have been in the same situation when I was younger, although 2 hours that kid is a champ at not getting amazingly bored in a car.

Problem is we got some pussy ass kids these days. I remember growing up in Newark and we didn't have AC. When summer came you sweated your ass off we called that conditioning training, kept you nice and fit.

is this a serious post lol? if the car starts after letting it run for a bit then its fine.. Draining the battery happens sometimes, same as leaving lights on inside the car overnight. If it won't start, buy a new battery.

What did you expect? If you left me waiting 2 hours in the car I'd start flipping switches too.

Two hours in a car by myself; I'd probably crank out a few all over your seats just to teach you a lesson.
