*** May need new transmission. What else should be replaced while the tranny is out?
May need new Automatic transmission on 328i under warranty due shuddering vibration issue at 1500 rpm while pressing gas pedal. Has 48k miles. The dealer replaced transmission fluid and added some additive as a first step. That didn't seem to do the trick. Still have vibrations. So I think next step would to replace torque converter and if that doesn't do it then its transmission. What else should be replaced when Transmission comes out? Main seal, drive shaft guibo???? I am willing to pay for the additional parts since it would not be covered under warranty.
Thoughts... Thanks Last edited by mp-E46; 09-16-2014 at 07:22 PM.. Reason: updated... |

Does it shudder only when shifting or just when hitting 1500 rpm's? It sounds like you're getting BS'd into a big problem whereas your real one sounds like a misfire under load.

Hmm.. you seem to know how cars function. Not to sound offensive, but you would be surprised at the inquiries we receive. If it is indeed a transmission problem, I would think that there would be some faults stored, but stuff happens. The torque converter would be my suspect, as they are the source of a "juddering" automatic transmission. My recommendation would be to not drive it until the problem is solved, as if the problem is with the TCC, it could shred it's internal lining. That would make your transmission issue so much worse.

There is no code stored according to SA and shop foreman. I guess there was a TSB that came out in beginning of 2014. Also what does the GM6 Top-Treat TCC do? That was added as the first step. Thanks |

I know nothing of your additive other than TCC means torque converter clutch. It is what gives you direct drive instead of a traditional auto transmission feel. I imagine that if they are specifically throwing in a TCC additive, that your TCC may be the problem.

So the dealer has submitted to replace the transmission. Waiting to hear back from BMW. In either case the next step is to replace the torque converter or transmission. It's happening....
My question is what other component should be replaced while the transmission is out. I am thinking the rear main seal, transmission mounts, may be the guibo flex disk.... Any suggestion would be much appreciated. |

I would say possibly on the main seal, but if it isn't leaking I wouldn't bother. Why not on the transmission mounts, you could get some racing ones! I would leave the flex disk alone too at that mileage. Really you just need to look and see for yourself what has degraded and requires attention.

Correct me if i am wrong, but my dealer will not replace components (whether i pay for them or not) if warranty work is being done. Warranty work is BARE MINIMUM to remedy the problem. For example, if they have 85k on a motor that has 4 bad valves and it is under extended warranty, they will ONLY replace those 4 valves, even though proper repair procedure would be to replace all. I am very interested on how your dealer handles this. Please keep us updated.
However, if they are going to replace the trans, and will allow you to add parts, do the Torque converter, mounts, guibo, etc. |

shuddering
i am having the same problem on my x3 wth the same tranny. i have in front of me a tsb from bmw, the problem wth the shuddering tranny is the friction properties of the tranny fluid has broken down the additive is to be put in tranny after draining the pan . i couldnt find the additive but replaced pan and filter wth 5qts of fluid problem is less noticeable but still there . my next step is to keep driving then after a 100miles or so i am going to redrain the pan and put in another 5 qts. of new dex6 to see if that remedies the shudder . if not the tsb states replace torque converter and if that doesnt solvethe issue replace tranny. seems like this should be a recall Bmw shoud resolve this problem since its no fault of the vehicles owners. hell i had 220k on my f150 and it never shuddered like my 123k x3

You got few miles in there. I would start looking for tranny. The dealer tried the same additive on mine. Didn't work. They pushed to get tranny instead of just torque converter. Mine is getting replaced at 44k. Apparently it's back ordered from Germany.
There is an aftermarket additive that people seemed to have luck. You will need to search on here. However I am not sure how many people are having this type of problem. GL |
