335d engine oil ?

Hey all, had a lookie about but all I could find was American topics about what oil to use , and due to it being a dam sight colder here in Scotland I didn't think they would be much use


My 2007 335d has the original 1l bottle of Castrol SLX 0w-30 in the boot bag , well I don't know if it's the original but it's definitely old as slx has since been replaced with castrol edge professional

Anyway my cars been remaped , and the dpf has went walkies , which makes me ask the question about this oil , 0w-30 just seams a bit on the thin side , I understand this oil will be low sulphide to stop killing the dpf

What do you guys run? My x5 3.0d ran 5w-30 one year and then 5w-40 the other year and I noticed zero difference , I noticed Bmw spec is LL04, how important is that? I understand for 15k service intervals yes, but I much rather get my cars oil changed @ 10k or annually which ever comes first


So I'm all ears open, as for brand , castrol or Mobil is Prob what il end up buying, after seeing these oils perform in the extreme heats of a desert rally to the extream coldness of a rally in Sweden I know what I'd use as my engines blood

Run something that meets bmw requirements ll04 etc I use good stuff for price Petronas synitum 5000 Av 5w30 which is best quality of Petronas on ecp 8 litres for £48.

Always sworn by Castrol 5w-30 and I'm mapped at 335bhp. Modest for a 335D I know but it's only stage 1.

No issues whatsoever with the viscoscity of the oil - hot or cold - she pulls like a train.

I don't know if VPower Diesel from Shell has anything to do with that or whether a placebo effect but yeah, I've always used Castrol LL04 5w-30.

Equally I would have no problems using Mobil1 or something similar.

BMW LL04 spec and 5w30. Castrol Edge and Mobile 1 are the only ones i use

I have used both castrol and Mobil 5w30 (LLO4) and I prefer to use the mobil for couple of reasons -
1 - I find the engine runs/sounds quieter with the mobil compared to the castrol
2 - castrol only comes in 4 litre cans whereas the mobil comes in 5 litre cans (better vfm at 10 litres of Mobil for £65) so I have plenty left over for top ups (but surprisingly mine hardly requires tops ups)

ahhh nice to know. will have to give this Mobil a try!

As the other guys above i always sworn by castrol 5w30 fully synth

Price has gone up by £1 to £33 per 5 litres and I normally collect save on postage as its round the corner from where i work

Yeh I see that is safe for the dpf , as above iv binned my dpf so "dpf safe" oil isn't a issue for me

I'm just going to go with castrol 5-30 I think just wanted to see if anyone had a recomended oil

Has everything you ever needed to know about oil. You can spend weeks on that site, in fact I did. With no dpf and no CBS you can use whatever you like. I always think 30W is too thin especially after its been munched up for a bit. Some oils loose grade after 1500 miles. I use Mobil 1 40W at least its a better hot margin when it looses some grade. In reality the frequency of changes is probably more important than any oil choice. Fuel economy and dpf life are the main factors for oem oil choice not longevity. Most people are using the lowest grade they can now for economy. Most bikes are down to a 30W these days but it always seems a bit close to the bone.

I can understand using a lower cold figure as a 0W will be easier to turn over and flow better than a 15W but why do you need thin hot figures except economy maybe.

Just my rambling thoughts of course.

You can use a variety of oil spec's actually(this is partially dictated by the climate the cars operating in) but 5-30 Castol Edge is the stuff we use to LL04 spec.
