Downpipes without JB4

So I'm looking to buy a catless downpipe very soon, i have an mppk. but no jb4..Will i be required to get it? i know my check engine light will come on and my car will throw codes but will it still be drivable? I most likely will get the jb4 not too long after

It'll be drivable. But being as you're from NY, you have the same inspection as I do, which means you'll fail immediately because the rear O2 will never be ready. Even with a JB4 it'll show as Not Ready. Even with a microcat to get it ready, when they see no cat, you fail. So unless you're planning on swapping the DP back to stock every year to pass inspection, do yourself a favor and get a catted one.

You can install without a JB4 or a tune but there won't be too much in power gains without a tune and as you noted you will have a CEL without a tune.

Do you know where I can find the manufacturing date of my car? Trying to see if I need a 3.5" dp or a 4.0

I sure do, it's located on the driverside door jam or door.

You need month and year.

After 7/13 you need the 4.0.

Before 7/13 you need the 3.0.

If you vehicle was made in 7/13 I always recommend folks to snap a picture of their downpipe and bracket as the 7/13 months can go either way.

Your car will drive fine, just ignore the engine light.
if you don't mind me asking, why are you getting the DP before the JB4?

Honestly, I just want the sound..(I have a meisterschaft full exhaust too) I already have a mppk (which was a waste of money) I also hope with my jb4 I won't lose the burble!! Hopefully it increases .. But my next step is jb4 and charge pipe

Should a catted dp pass everytime? I've been told by ER that they aren't 100%...

have you thought about this? http://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho...=Macht+Schnell

might be just what your looking for

also being able to close the valves with DPs is a very nice option. I have catless dps and its loud with valves open, valves closed however is same as stock

correct however not everyone wants to run a tune. I believe the OP is looking for a solution that doesn't require a tune which is why I suggested this. But if your looking for a tune then def having a valve control is a plus

A lot of them aren't 100%. I'm still doing some research on one that will always get through. Challenge said they're working on a new one that will always pass, and AR Design is good about 90% of the time. I had pipes from Ultimate Racing on my X5M that got through every time, though I'm not sure if they have anything for the 4" N55 yet.

The M-S valve control is a joke at that price.

Yes, because the MPPK is unnecessarily dumping extra fuel during negative manifold pressure to make noises which some people think sounds cool. The JB4 is taking fuel signals and correcting them going to the ECU to prevent this. Not only will this result in your car sounding much better, but it will be more efficient and result in less soot on your rear bumper.
