Dealer Fees

Hello all..I just put a deposit on a 335i coupe and the fees they hit me with seem a little bit high:
NJ supplemental Titling Fee: $184
Registration/title Fee: $351
Documentary Fee: $349

Did anybody buy their bmw from open road in NJ and if so do these fees sound about right?

I got hit with a couple fees in VA, about 400 dollars worth. Advertising Fee and Training Fee. Those looks like fees needed for registering and titling your vehicle, more then likely they are legit. Although not sure about a Documentary fee, that one looks suspect.

I'm sorry but almost all those fees are bogus. It dosen't cost 351 to title and register the car, and that doc fee is WAY too high. I paid $50 for mine. Also, that supplemental titling fee is bologne! no such a thing as charging an extra fee for them to title your car (which they already charge you for)!!!!

hey i just recently bought my 335i at Circle Bmw in Eatontown. I only pay $75 for documentary fee. As for the registration/title fee, it states on the contract "COD upon receipt from DMV." And the dealer left out the supplemental titling fee. Hope if this helps.

The fees sound outrageous.

What is a "supplemental titling fee?" Then on top of that they are charging you a $349.00 fee to do what they are in business to do anyway. The document fee is a cost of their doing business just as are the salaries they pay the clerical staff, the heat and light etc. I have never paid a document fee-and have never even seen one that high. Find out what they claim their fee covers, and if they tell you it is to do the paper work tell them thats what part of their profit goes for.

They send one man or use and agency to go to DMV and pick up the paperwork for a number of cars at once. Preparing the paperwork with their computers is effortless and costs them almos nothing.

If they tell you it is "printed on the buyers order so legally everyone has to pay it" tell them fine, you'll pay it after they deduct the fee from the cost of the car.

I see the "doc. fee" as nothing more than additional dealer markup.

I have bought many many cars in NJ and as I said never even heard of a "supplemental title fee."

I also do not trust Open road. I bought-or tried to buy a car from them twice and each time left without a car.

The last time I had a signed buyers order, an agreed to deal and when I went to pick up my car the salesman told me they needed another $500.00. He said the SM should not have agreed to such a low price and that the GM tore the agreement up.

This is absolutely 100% correct for the state of NJ. (.4% not .004% though) The people here stating it is bogus do not know NJ law. Feel free to look it up yourself. Although 45K is not the only metric used for the supplemental title fee. It is greater than 45K and/or less than 19mpg.

The doc fee is bogus. Doc fees in NJ usually range from 125 to 200. I have never seen a doc fee over 200.

EDIT: Are you working with John Barnes. It was like pulling teeth getting him to clarify all the numbers for me. I wound up buying from Flemington. Very good dealership to do business with. The three dealerships I seriously negotiated with were Flemington, JMK, and Open Road. I would rank my experience with them in that order as well. JMK's doc fee is $125. Flemington's is $197. Ask for Artus at JMK. Ryan or Tom at Flemington.

I work at a dealership and have worked at several in my 14+ years. There's a doc fee at almost every store you will find.I even had to pay it at my local Bmw dealer, but they gave me my 335i at $500 over invoice plus the doc fee.The maco fee and other smaller fee that shows up on the invoice are the advertising fees, and they have to do with what region you live in.I almost ordered one out of state, but my local dealer came down some but I still couldn't get out of the damn doc fee.If they charge it to one person, they have to charge it to everyone.

Since I'm about to pick up my car I'm curious as to the fees you got hit with at our dealership. I'm assuming Austin BMW.

Tell them to waive some of those fees otherwise they will lose your business.

A supplemental title fee? I have bought many-over 100 cars in the state of NJ and have never heard of such a fee on any brand of car.

Is this a fee that came about in the past 3 months.

The last time I heard of a fee for a car over a certain dollar amount was when we had a luxury tax which went away years ago.

It is odd that-yes I heard of a document fee, but never paid it, but never even heard of a "supplemental title fee.)

I am curious if this fee really exists, and is hidden elsewhere in most deals.

I stand-or rather sit corrected. The fee does exist as of 11/2007. I moved to Pa. in July of 2007, and bought two vehicles in NJ since then. The fee does not apply to out of state residents registering their car in a state other than NJ.

Yet another ridiculous fee. I guess it is to make up for the low property taxes.

2Many,

Low property taxes?? In NJ?? You're kidding, right?

I don't know what "NJ supplemental Titling Fee" fee is but I suppose it's associated with the luxury tax (cars over $45k). I made sure to keep my car just under $45k so I didn't have to pay this tax.

Mine are only $8k (what a bargain)... but I live in a townhouse! Granted, it's a big townhouse but still, I don't even own the land outside my front door!
