Freaky toaster
Wifey was putting a salad together tonight when she said she smelled something burning. She wasn't cooking anything. Then she said there was a lot of heat coming from somewhere near the toaster. She pulled it out from under the cabinets and saw it was red hot inside, like if it had been toasting. Both toaster slides were in the up position and had been off since this morning. The damn thing just turned itself on. We unplugged it, of course, and will trash it. Wifey read on some fire prevention site a few minutes later that toaster springs can wear over time and let the switch make contact even if the slides are up. Our toaster came out here with us from MA, so it's at least 13 years old. I'm just glad we were home when this happened, although we almost always unplug the toaster when it's not being used.
So now we need a dishwasher, toaster, and toaster oven.

I always unplug the toaster oven and toaster after use. Glad to hear that you caught it.

Back when I had my own apartment, the kitchen was small and didn't have much outlets, and the corner that I can usually plug it into already had a coffee machine, bag of whole coffee beans and grinder there, so I'd have to take the toaster over, make toast, then put it back to where it's more neater, so by default it's unplugged. Yes, I'm OCD like that.
But also, aren't new toasters electronically controlled though? I mean, gone are the days where you can just flip up the slide toggle if you think it's cooked enough or burnt, rather than hearing the blare of the smoke detector and having to go "holy crap! My toast! F**K, where the hell is the 'cancel' button?!?!?"

In my case (before anybody asks), I like fresh-ground coffee and always bought whole beans, so I did have a coffee grinder.

I assumed coffee grinder when I read that.
We ended up trashing the old toaster oven and just going with a much smaller toaster oven. We never did anything with the toaster oven but reheat stuff anyway. Now we can toast and reheat and not have two appliances. Extra counter space is always good.

Normally it's always unplugged. Wifey was home working that day, so I left it plugged in thinking she'd be using it for her breakfast later. She had something besides toast and hadn't noticed it was still plugged in. Next time I'll just unplug everything and she can plug it in again if she needs it.

Didn't even really know what it was. I just looked it up on the app store.

There's nothing brave about a little toaster that commits suicide.
Thanks for the valuable life lesson though, I used to keep my toaster plugged in. |

We unplug everything except the Keurig since the female of the house basically needs a coffee IV when she is home

I wouldn't think coffee makers would be much of a threat. I don't think they get that hot. I could be wrong, though. But unplugging a coffee maker with a timer for morning coffee seems somewhat counterproductive.
