Leasing cars out-of-state...how?
But can I purchase a car in NJ and have it registered in NY? I know it's possible, but I want to know how someone goes about doing this. Does the dealership take care of this?
In the spring I'm looking to lease a 330i and would really like to visit Prestige (NJ) first. Most of you guys have said good things about this dealership. BTW-I work in Montvale so Wide World would be close too. |

I did opposite. Leased from wide world and registered in NJ.
They handled my NJ registration and my NJ plates came in the mail. Then, I just had to go and get the inspection sticker from the NJ DMV (just a formality since it's a new car). NY dealers can't issue NJ inspection stickers. I don't how this process works in reverse but I suspect it's similar and it's not a big deal at all. Lease from whomever gives you the best price.

All of my BMWs (incl. those delivered in Munich) have come from a NJ dealership - DiFeo - and they took care of all of the registration details.
If you want an intro to the salesperson I work with - and I've bought cars from her for the past 15 years - send me a PM. Great dealership. Ever think about European Delivery?

I buy or lease my cars in NJ only. Service is better, I believe. I don't like any dealers in the 5 boroughs and some in LI.
The dealers process all of the NY registration paperwork. You get a temporary paper plate that they attach to your back window when you pick up your car. After about 20-30 days your dealer will call you to let you know that your NY plates and registration has come in. You can pick it up or they will mail it to you. When you get the plates and registration, they also give a temporary inspection sticker. You have to get your car inspected in NY. Since it's a new car, it's only a safety inspection and costs only $10.

Buying a car out of state isn't nearly as complicated as you would think. I purchased my car in NJ (Prestige), but had it registered in NY. They will base your tax rate on the county of your residence. Just as others have mentioned, you will get a 21 day Non-resident permit. My plates got to the dealer within 2 weeks. Prestige offered to send the plates to my home via next day service, but I was in the area and just stopped by (they mounted the plates for me, too).
A few years ago, I leased a VW from a NJ dealer and had it registered in GA. This transaction was very simple, but the plates took a little longer than expected. The dealer renewed my 21 day permit twice!

i see... so really, consider any dealer around that you can get to and drive the car back from and for which you get the best price/sale experience.
they'll always do the tax based on where you 'live'... do dealers ship to you for a fee? i was thinking if you land a purchase for a real good price but it's say on the other coast, what would shipping fees be, say 500bucks? |
