Another sad day in racing. Freak accident just like Massa's.

I was watching that race live and saw that accident. What a sad ending for Justin. Seemed to be a nice guy. Always smiling.
Was in a wrong place at a wrong time. R.I.P. Justin
They have to close those cockpits. Massa was lucky when he was hit by a flying spring from another car in formula one and now this, ending tragically.

Open wheel racing....

I think LeMans is moving to closed cockpits next year due to these things

Incredibly sad day. Thoughts with his family, and I 100% agree with you; designers need to find a way to protect the heads of the drivers from flying debris. If that means an enclosed cockpit, then so be it!

Absolutely gutted right now. Justin was a family friend. I can't believe he is gone. Here is a photo of JW my dad and I testing before the Pikes Peak Hillclimb this year. (In a BMW of course) Truly the nicest man I have ever known. #JWmyhero rest in peace brother.

A real shame. He seemed like a cool guy. Another miserable ending to an Indycar season, circa 2011.

Still in a bit of shock. Worked a few races with him back in 2009ish, one of those people that leaves an impression on you (which is extremely rare in life, let alone a driver). Gutted for the family, friends, and crew.

I was there. I have no words that can express the quietness and solemness of the place after the accident...everyone there knew it was a horrible thing even though the track never showed any replays and it occurred in a spot that nobody could see. Safety crews there did a great job of responding and getting him out of the car and into the helicopter and off to the hospital in a very expedient fashion (about 15 mins).

Up until that point it was a great race - I have been to 8 F1 races and this was definitely better and way more entertaining to watch as a racing fan than any of them ever were, but you have to think hard about closed cockpits given the speeds these particular cars can generate. I've felt horrible/empty all week because of this as I'm sure we all are. But hats off to a great safety crew and response at the track and prayers and wishes for his family and friends as well as fellow competitors...as well as Andretti racing who have done so much for the sport and gave him the drive but right now are feeling the pain as much as anyone else. Rip JW.
