Metal in oil filter and oil pan
I took my car to the dealer for a leaking oil pan gasket and the tech found some metal in the filter and the oil pan. No check engine light and it runs good.
I bought the car back in 2013 with 38K miles. It now has 60K. It has another year of CPO. I always do 5K miles oil changes with OEM parts. Car info: ?2011 328i ?Sport package ?manual trans Can I send the filter to Black Stone for analysis? What do you think? |

That looks like a ring disintegrated. Wait until the next oil change and they may not honor the warranty if the problem wasn't addressed as soon as it was discovered.

On a side note. Until 6 months ago, I was a tech at the dealership. I'm a certified BMW master tech. I know everybody there. Some I'm not worry about having warranty problems.

The metal is coming from somewhere aND I'm sure it was chewing on something before the filter got all that. That's what it looks like just before a rod goes through the block.

Until there is a more evidence, a SES light or engine noise. It will be very difficult to get an engine. If I had a month left in my warranty I would be freaking out. But 14 months and 40K miles should be enough. |

Personally, if it was my car and I didn't have too much invested in it, I would sell it ASAP. Even if the problem later arises, dealing with it will be a major pain in the ass. You might even be make a good return on investment since it's still under CPO warranty. Sorry to hear about your problem OP, and good luck!

The next piece of evidence you get could be your engine going pop. To keep driving that car, knowing there is a potential serious problem is putting yourself and other road users at risk. |
