Looks like Ferrari and Mercedes have different tire strategies for the race. Benz going with more soft tires, while Ferrari choosing a couple extra sets of Mediums.

We will see if Ferrari can get off the line 1-2 again, so we have another race on our hands. Ferrari does seem to have pace at Bahrain every year. Kimi had a good race last year, splitting the Mercedes on the podium.

Different tire compounds have really spiced things up this year -- and kind of leaving an unknown (which is good). I'm surprised Ferrari didn't put more emphasis on the softer compounds since that seems to help keep Merc at bay.

Agree, the new tire regs are the most significant change this year. Not this pointless elimination style quali. Ferrari is still down on pace, but the new tire regs give them different options/strategies each race weekend.

Alonso Out for Bahrain; Stoffel Vandoorne to step in - very interested to see how he does given the hype around him.

I had a feeling we'd see that. Read somewhere that Alonso sustained 46G's during the crash. Better to be cautious. Wonder what kind of pace Mclaren will have, Vandoorne isn't in the greatest car.

So why does Force India get to leave Kingfisher on their car while Williams and McLaren have to remove their alcohol sponsors?

Getting cautiously optimistic that Macca actually have created something that can at least keep up with the pace car...

Kingfisher is (was) also an airline.

So the new quali format was just fine today. All teams has now understood it and cars qualified much according to ability. The two exceptions was Ericsson who choose to hang out in the pit in Q1 while being far down the list and got caught out. Solely a team mistake and not a rule issue. The other exception was the Toro Rosso guys in Q2 that elected to not attempt getting into Q3 and rather stayed just behind the threshold allowing them to select tires freely for the race.

Ferrari looks able to give Benz some hell again this year. Hopefully it lasts longer than last year.

What about Kyvat, Button, Gutierrez, Vandoorne not even having a chance to make a second lap in quali 2. The countdown clock started before any of them had made it in from their first flying lap. Kyvat and Gutierrez both had cars capable of quicker times.

Kyvat crossed the line at 9:38 in quali 2, countdown clock was at 38sec for position 15. How is it good for fans he is not allowed to improve his time? But, Gut, Van were in the same situation.

You are ok with the dead track at end of quali 2? And only Ferrari and Mercedes running at end of quali 1?

The elimination quali provides less cars on the track, opposite of what it was suppose to provide.

The gap in quali is larger than it was last year between Ferrari and Mercedes.

I didn't get to watch the last qualifying, so this was my first time to form an opinion. I agree, it wasn't too bad. I still think there are some kinks to work out (tires and timing) but to me it wasn't a complete failure I was expecting. I guess it happened in the other format, but there is a lot of time with no cars on the track.

I don't understand the need to eliminate quick cars that make a mistake in their first lap of a quali 2.

It denies the fans a chance to see someone like Kyvat/RedBull come out at the end of session and try to make quali 3.

Bottom four cars in quali 2 were basically eliminated when they crossed the line after their first lap.

All had a chance to run fast laps in Q2. Some elected to gamble on getting out late on track. Their fault.
