N54 335i oil temp
What oil temps do you guys have?
Have noticed over the last couple of months that my oil temps at 120 degrees centigrade. It always used to be around 110 unless I had been for a special drive It just seems to be running a little hotter than it used to.

I don't think it's weather related, I've had the car for 4 years & middle of summer normal driving it used to sit around 110 or just under. Last couple of months oil temps been 10 degrees or so higher, even on a cool rainy day.
Just curious to know what temps other people have. Thanks

Mines usually at 110ish with the odd drop down to 100.
The N54 is designed to run warmer than most so it's perfectly normal at 100-110 but if normal running is 120ish then don't believe that's right and could be an issue. Only on track should it be at 120 or above.

Yeah that's fine if giving it some on occasion but if just driving around normally then shouldn't really be hitting 120. On the sprint day I did it didn't even hit 120 but it was only one flying lap.

Mines usually around the 100 more so 110 nice fully warmed up after say 20 or so minutes of driving from cold.
I've see on mine the occasional 120ish but nothing really higher, which I consider about right, driven quite a few of these for varying reasons for test drive purposes for customers again 100, 110 or so seems the norm from what I can see unless the cars pushed performance wise where I've seen a little higher |

Thanks for the input guys
As I thought 110 seems to be the norm. Not sure if it's a coincidence but I seem to have been getting the higher oil temp since having the gearbox remapped. D now feels as if the gearbox is in sports mode all the time.

Gearbox cooler and oil cooler are well away from each other, so gearbox temps wont have any bearing on oil temps.
In the winter i struggled to get above 100degs - even ragging it. Now the better weather is here, I sit at 110degs as standard. When it's been really hot and i'm sat in traffic, it gets to about 115degs. On track, it ends up above 130degs (and then throws limp mode ) |

Hi abeardo, how's u doin?
I was thinking that with the gearbox remap maybe the engine is running at higher revs than it used to. Before I had the gearbox done if I drove it in sports I used to get higher oil temps, since the remap the car feels like its in sport all the time. Oil temps don't go above 120 no matter how hard I drive it,

Cheers guys,
Maybes I will try different oil, I have always used castrol edge 5w30 as that's what main dealer put in when I first bought it & had a MD oil change, nowadays I change the oil myself. Had a look on the castrol website & they are saying edge 0w30, I will change to that. It also looks like I have developed a oil leak around bottom of oil filter. Have ordered new gasket. I'll change that, new filter, different oil, then see how it goes.

Mine sits at 110 ish. Have seen 120 this week, whilst stuck in traffic with the a/c on. My old E60 M5 would sit at 90-100, whereas my E46 M3 was 85-90. The N54 certainly runs warm.

I have found out what was causing the higher oil temps, the vent in the wheel arch that lets the hot air out was caked with dried mud & various other crap cleaned it out yesterday whilst enjoying a cheeky beer or three. I went for a little blast this morning & temps are back to normal
Their was me thinking it was due to higher revs because of the gearbox map, duh! On another note I had been getting some brake judder, I took it out yesterday morning after having not driven it since last weekend (the missus abuses, I mean uses the car during the week) the brake judder was terrible. I took it into my local STS (ordered in a pair of pilot super sports for the back) & they did a free brake test, seems the drivers side front brake is out of balance Before spending out on new front discs I thought I'd strip it down & have a look see. Jacked it up to find the drivers side front wheel wasn't spinning freely & the disk was rubbing very badly. Upon inspection I noticed the captive pad wasn't seated properly, took the pads out cleaned them up. Cleaned off a lot of carbon deposits from calliper. Gave the disk a rub over with some wet & dry, sprayed everything with brake cleaner. Copper eased the necessary bits put it back together. Brake judder 97 percent gone. There's still occasionally a bit of judder so maybe that binding front calliper has warped a disc. Note to self check & clean brakes regularly.

Good man. Love these types of post.
I always make sure I nail the vent with the hose pipe when I was the car. That seems to keep the crap away. |

Funnily enough just before getting the gearbox remapped I was sliding the old girl about in a wet grassy field just because I had the opportunity to do so BTW your cars looking good, yours & mine no longer look like twins now |

I've seen mine on 160 C after two hours of city driving on a +30 C day but it didn't bother me as the shearing temperature of oil is north of 240 C. From time to time you might end up around 120 C or more but it is nothing to be concerned with unless you have a red warning light which comes on after 170 C

Yeah I know, although I don't intend to do much more to it now to alter the appearance of it. Only the LCI rear lights and maybe LED side repeaters. ALl other mods will be non-visible ones. |
