Is it okay to top off my oil with a different type?

At my last oil change I had 5W-40 put in (don't know the brand), and 7000 miles later I am getting a "+1qt" light on my dash, I don't have 5W-40 but I have some Mobile 1 synthetic 5W-30. I'm planning on getting an oil change within the next week, but in the meantime is it alright to just add a half quart of this 5W-30 (Mobile 1 fully synthetic)? This will only be in the car for about a week until I can get it changed out.

2,907 posts under your belt, various mods done to your car, high rep count which tells me you're a contributing member and you don't know what oil is in your car and whether or not its ok to top up with another???

You kidding with us right?

Your answer better be yes.

In principle, no.

The real question is 1) why did it burn thru a quart in just 7k miles, or 2) can you really believe that message given it is based on a sensor reading?

Either you are leaking a fair amount of oil, which is a concern - or your oil level is fine and the sensor(s) are flaking out - which will have you overfilling - equally a concern.

I would put the car up on ramps and start looking for leaks top and bottom. Else, drain the oil and measure it. Having no dipstick is an insanity we have to live with, unfortunately.

Oil is oil for the most part. I top mine off with whatever is nearby. Usually the generic 10w-30 that I use in the Miata. Works fine.

I use OEM oil usually, and I try to keep a quart handy in my garage in case it's needed, but I got caught a couple hundred miles from home a few weeks ago and my car asked for a quart. I snagged some Mobil 1 and dumped it in. I didn't notice any adverse affects, but the car was also due for an oil change shortly after, so it wasn't in there long. I'm not worried about it.

So long as it's synthetic and the same weight/viscosity as what you've already got, I'm sure you'll be fine.

Burning through a quart in that mileage range on a higher mileage BMW is common. Nothing to worry about.

Well, I added 2/3 a quart and it went up to the "max" line, then settled half way between that and the middle line, I think it's good.

Did you notice any difference with royal purple, like is oil temperature lower? Wanted to try it, however I've read mixed reviews about it...

Royal Purple is one of the worst oils I've ever used/tested in my last 3 cars. Sheared MUCH quicker than Mobil1 when going through multiple passes. I mean, it might be different for NA, but I only use Mobil1 and recently just switched to Shell Rotella T6. Rotella hardly lost any viscosity through multiple passes.

..and compared to my Blackstone reports on LiquiMoly the reports I got back on Mobil 1 looked like the report I saw after engine break in. So if you're seeing RP reports that are that bad compared to M1, sheesh...

The T6 is actually pretty good stuff at half the price of LiquiMoly but I saw a lot more build up in the heads than I like with T6, where LiquiMoly has stayed beautifully clean with just a hint of gold on the castings in the head.

At 250k on my built twin turbo the main bearings looked like they has 25k on them, and that car ran LiquiMoly its entire life. I'm pretty sold on it.

What about pennzoil and their new natural gas treated oil?
