E91 turbo replacement
Hi all,
I'm new to the world of e90s but not BMWs. Having just acquired the MSport touring with 62k I decided to have the oil changed at my local Authorised BMW garage. They called me up and said the turbos needed to be replaced due to worn waste gates. I knew about this and the HPFP issue before I made the purchase but there was no sign when I test drove and listened carefully to the car before purchase. The car has a full BMW history with Sytners and I even called them who inspected the car in Feb and they said all was well. Anyhow I now have the dreaded turbo cost looming and BMW warranty appear to be doing their utmost to wriggle out of covering albeit the car is stock and always serviced by BMW. What the consensus on the best way forward if BMW warranty don't cover it? I've seen a great post of a DIY replacement and I'm handy with tools and have an inspection pit in the garage. Appreciate any help and advice and thanks for reading! |

Did you buy the car from BMW, and / or is the car under warranty? If so they've not really got a leg to stand on.
If you do end up having to pay yourself, get the turbos refurbished rather than buy new ones. Refurbed units from turbo technics are typically better than new OE ones. Not sure I'd want to do it myself. The guys that did mine said they'd never do one again as it's such a ballache. |

Whatever happens. Do not attempt to do it yourself. It's the shittest job I have ever seen. Much easier to lift the motor and do it on a stand.
WM Edit to add. Put a link up to the diy you have seen and ill explain why. |

The turbos may not need replacing I was told both of mine needed replacing by Arden BMW & there was nothing wrong with them, it was just the clamps connecting turbos to charge air manifold.

Have you got any fault codes?
If they aren't springing a code I wouldn't worry about changing them. BMW warranty should cover them, especially as you are only at 62k |

Before I purchased my car the previous owner had the turbos replaced. Bmw paid for the Labour and previous owner paid for the turbos. This was when the car was at 93k although he had a good relationship with the dealer and all the cars work had been done there. So a bit strange if your bmw warranty won't cover it.

I wonder how many turbos have been replaced due to failure of the clamps that connect them to charge air manifold

Wow your garage must be desperate for work if they are proactively suggesting turbo replacement!
Glad warranty are paying though, it's not a job you want to pay for out of your own pocket. |
