Hydrocarbons, how clean is your engine?

Had my 335i mot,d today & I have been looking back over the previous emission tests, as the cars got older & the miles have clocked up my HC readings have gone down, I would have thought they would have gone up as the miles increased & the carbon build up to have got worse.

2011 44k HC 26 ppm
2012 58k HC 13
2013 71K HC 11
2014 81k HC 10
2015 90k HC 9
2016 100k HC 2

So I bought the car back in 2011 with a fresh mot, since then I have only used Shell V Power, is the reduction in HC due to the use of V Power petrol?

Would be interesting to know other people's HydroCarbon readings & what fuel used.

Mine always reads 0 at mot time. 90k miles. 330d. As far as I know dpf still fitted. Mix of fuel mainly normal diesel with the occasional tank of supreme diesel.

Probably due to the increasing content of ethanol in fuels.

The increasing amount of oxygen in the blend (from OH) in alcohols improves the efficiency of combustion. Less unburned hydrocarbons, CO, and more CO2.

Original VPower was ethanol free, now it' probably 5% or a bit more.

An EU directive was pushing for 15% but who knows what will happen following Brexit.
