M57 325D Thermostat

Hi guys,

Got a feeling I may have a dud thermostat & I'd like to change it before I sell the car.

Am I right in saying these have two thermostats? If so, how can I tell which one is knackered? I've checked the hidden display & it shows my temps don't get past 66ish degrees no matter how far/hard I drive.

With the registration there is only one showing on ECP:

Cheers,
Jordan

Sorry I'm confused, is the one I have linked the main or EGR?

Is there a way of seeing which has failed, other than changing it & checking?

Cheers

That one was the egr thermostat...

I would change them both along with the fuel filter, but then I like preventative maintenance

I used to agree with you. But my last Cotswold BMW supplied stat lasted less than 2 years so if you can make a saving by buying a decent brand like Mahle or febi etc then you may as well do it.......

Thanks, I can't see how the fuel filter would have any relation to temps though?

Cheers,
Jordan

Filter gets clogged up over time, makes the fuel pump work that little bit harder.

You cant tell which one(s) are faulty. They're not too expensive so you may as well change both. I have read that autos may have one too?
I had 75C temps - I changed the EGR thermostat - made no difference.
My indy changed the main thermostat along with the water pump. Temps immediately rose to 95C.
TBH, I've been driving for 28yrs and have never had to change a thermostat and my last Honda had 154k miles.

yes you can tell....you can warm engine up in path and check top hose is still cold...most stats (main)fail partially open so you will feel heat circulating ...with the hidden menu on 3 series you should see temp get to 88c before top hose starts to warm as this is temp that stat lifts off the seat ..as for egr stat they should be replaced as a matter of course..later models don't have these as ,I wonder why
ps ive seen hundreds of faulty stats ,they only show their ugly heads in winter to owners
