Mars

Am I the only one enjoying this? So much so that I actually went onto the NatGeo website and watched the short film about the sisters on the team. 33 minutes of outcast teen drama, but I'm still thinking of my own desire to go "out there"

I see myself getting caught in a trap similar to Starship Troopers. With quality propaganda like this, I can easily get behind a Mars tax to get a person there by 2035.

I'm all for the space race to Mars, even if it's only 1 competitor. Sick of outsourcing our space program to the Soviets, cough, Russians. Kennedy is rolling over in his grave.

Dude, I already have a plan to get there. NASA won't fricking listen to me but I'll outline it here.

1. Start developing real ionic propulsion. (Start Now)

2. Launch a series of cargo ships carrying living and medical supplies for 3 years. The landing modules will be converted to living spaces by robots. (Living space. This ain't a safe space.) Start 7 years in advance and launch every 6 months. This continues for a total of 20 years.

3. Launch emergency return vehicle with trajectory to be in position at the half-way point when the manned vehicle passes. It will maintain a trajectory to intersect any manned ships en route to Mars

4. Launch factory ships to Mars equipped with 3D printers to manufacture replacement parts and create needed. This continues for a total of 20 years.

5. Launch ionic propulsion modules into Earth orbit.

6. Launch first 5 man crew into Earth orbit. These are the builders who will ensure proper assembly of the living quarters.

7. Launch 5-man crews every 6 months until a population of 100 or so is reached.

8. Maintain colony in perpetuity.

I would go but I have no useful skills to contribute. I'll just stay here and manufacture drugs.

How are you going to solve the fact that radiation in deep space will kill them before they reach?

I never said conventional. As in all great endeavors, new tech will be necessary. My physics is too rusty to dig too deeply into this without my head falling off but the plan I delineated depends on building ships in space. Too much fuel is spend overcoming the gravity well. Additionally, eliminating the gravity well and atmospheric friction frees the design process a design that will work better in space including better shielding.

Tax cuts. Privatization. Better energy production. (Nuclear)

Technological innovation. If you start with a moon base, a mining operation there could produce resources for mars missions, but also a supply of helium 3 and possibly fusion reactiors on earth.

Starship Troopers was a cool movie, got it as x-rated onto DVD.
But: If ya gonna plan to go to Mars...dude, leave your damn poultry at home

Mars is a great show. I've worked for NASA/LM for over 9 years. It makes me happy to see a small bit of public interest in space again.

What?

You dont think manipulating climate/temp data and performing muslim outreach is part of the core mission of NASA?

This rocket engine breaks a law of physics. But a NASA test says it works anyway. - The Washington Post
https://apple.news/AzR8nkdxQQ36YyyKG1LasxQ

Very interesting article I read yesterday.

And as a sidebar.......saw "Arrival" day before yesterday. Decent movie, but I kept wondering, if I was the physicist (Jeremy Renner) going into the ship, I'd be freaking out about the artificial gravity, and perhaps the presence of reactionless thrusters (no apparent emissions at all from the alien ship).

Cool article. My only complaint is that the scientist are two conservative. They need to build a big honking cone, hook it up to the biggest nuclear reactor that can drive the big honking cone to in a reasonable period of time and hook 'er up. Boom. Test done. Well, hopefully not Boom but you get the point.

So how much does it cost to get an EM drive on the next rocket to ISS?
