E90/E92 Head unit question
Hi Guys,
I am planning to buy a used E92. However the previous owner removed the head unit of the car and installed an after market unit(he lost the original head unit). I am not sure if the steering wheel buttons work with the after market head unit. Will be checking it the coming week when i take it to a workshop for a complete check up. My question is, if I buy a used head unit online from another car, is it plug and play or will I need to get it coded to my car? I know for the instrument cluster if you install from another car it shows an error and won't work properly unless it's coded to the specific VIN. Is this true for the head unit as well? thanks in advance! |

Seeing you need a new head unit, you may as well install the newest version and put in an NBT. I did this on my 2008 E92, is not too hard to do and is amazing compared to the old CCC and CIC units DIY below http://www.e90post.com/forums/showth...&highlight=NBT |

Yeah you can get a Rad 2 from a junk yard no problem. Should be able to find one on eBay. Plug and play in my experience.

The Pro Head Unit can be programmed for three different
sound systems plus options like bluetooth , bmw sos and pdc. Not very likely to find one that is exactly set up for your car but they can be programmed if you have the right software and cable. You can find out which options the car was set up for by running a vin check with one of the free bmw vin checkers found online. There is a stereo subforum here also http://www.e90post.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=27 BMW stereo types http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=352586 http://www.e90post.com/forums/attach...2&d=1266451970 http://www.e90post.com/forums/attach...2&d=1260829447 http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=343673 http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=138949 http://www.e90post.com/forums/attach...1&d=1209780605 http://www.e90post.com/forums/attach...1&d=1209780865 http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=641323 http://bmwcoders.com/forum/3-er-8/bm...1-e92-e93-291/ http://technicpnp.com/menuDiagrams/d...e90_92_93.html http://www.musicarnw.com/page-2/ http://www.e90post.com/forums/attach...4&d=1278871872 Also if you do not have a stock head unit installed BMW will not be able to do repairs or software updates to the car.
