Buying out of state (CA)

Guys,

I am a California resident and getting my car from outside the state. I was trying to setup a dmv appointment for registration/title and noticed this:

"If you are a California resident and acquire a new car, truck, or motorcycle from another state, it must be certified to meet California smog laws to be registered in California.
To find out whether a car, truck, or motorcycle is California certified, check the emission label under the hood. For a motorcycle, check the frame or refer to your owner' s manual for the location. The label should read that the vehicle conforms to California regulations, or that it is legal for sale in California.
"

Am I screwed now? Can anyone (outside CA) check underneath their hood and see if it says anything about CA emission?

Has any CA resident done this before?

Thanks!!

I believe all BMW's sold in the USA are 50 state legal. There is a sticker on the underside of the hood that shows its US and CA emissions approvals.

The M2 is Cali smog legal. You will just have to get it smog'd; which sounds ridiculous on a brand new car. But that's living in CA...

I bought my M2 out of state, I am currently going through the registration process in California. Had to get it smogged, just waiting on the bank to send a copy of the title to the DMV to finish the registration process, since the car wasn't registered in the state I bought it in. Also forgot to mention I had to pay the sales tax differential, which amounted to $730.00.

I am also in California and bought the M2 in Texas. In addition to having to have the M2 smogged I also had to go by the CHP and have the VIN verified.

Went thru same thing. 50 state legal; smog and VIN cert was reqd. For VIN cert, you can pay a lttle more and have one of those mobile, DMV-authorized, 3rd party companies come to you.

There is no way we can save on sales taxes right ??
If we could, I would just buy it in Oregon and have it registered in Cali.

Nope.... we're stuck with it. The Texas dealer actually took care of paying the CA DMV fees and CA taxes.

Wow they didn't have me verify my DMV with CHP. The DMV employee did it. Hmm I hope they don't throw that in at a later date, I haven't gotten my car fully registered yet.
