Failed Guibo
To make a long story short I had to replace a failed guibo this week end. As my guibo had only 20,000 miles on it, I did not expect that to be the cause of my current problem. The idea of how this unit failed has been bugging me for the past day and I think I have it sorted.
Notice the direction of the torque on the guibo, the torque was pulling the thicker section of the disk apart while compressing the thinner section. This seemed completely wrong to me. I know I had it installed correctly, all you need to do is keep the arrows pointed towards the flanges, right? Then I took another look comparing the used OEM guibo that I happened to have in the garage and the answer hit me. Notice the arrows, They are pointed in the opposite direction. if the OEM guibo is installed correctly the thicker section is in compression while the thin section is in tension. Moral of the story, buy better spare parts. I bought a guibo from Amazon that had the hardware included. Seemed like a good buy. Stay away from the Dorman 935-403. |

E46 M3 /Z4M Guibo is also an upgrade option that should last longer. Marginally thicker so you'd need different bolts, but otherwise there's enough slack in the rear CV to accommodate the extra thickness.
